I've studied both Japanese and Chinese, in which language (if any) can I use [笑] (warau/xiao) by itself to say lol? In fact, how do I say lol in both languages?

Hi Ashly, 'LOL' mostly means "laugh out loud." Some say it could also mean "lots of love."

Anyway, since LOL is about laughing out loud, therefore just using「 笑 」won't be enough to convey its intended meaning (people may interpret it as sniggering because of its broad meaning.) A more exact Chinese expression (and probably original too) would be「 大笑哈哈哈! 」or just plain「 大笑 」.

大笑 (dà xiào) means a big laugh.
哈哈哈 (hā hā hā) here is equivalent to the laughing sound ha ha ha.

Of course you can! It is an Internet language we use in forums or messengers in Chinese, but we almost always add parenthesis when using it. It can be used in numerous occasions, just like lol.

Examples:
1. 我被稱讚了耶~~ (笑)
(I am praised~~ lol)
2. A: 他居然聽不出來我在諷刺他!
(And he can't figure out that I was being scornful to him!)
B: 哈~~那個笨蛋 (笑)
(Ha~~ That fool lol)
3. 我終於買到最酷的手機了! (笑)
(I've finally bought the coolest cell phone lol)

One thing to remember is that (笑) is only restrained to informal messages or documents.

Click 日本語 in 'in other languages' box. You can see your guess is basically right in Japanese and it lists some variations.
