When it's born at a big breeder or bird Mill. They put a band on it. So lets say it gets out the open window, if some1 finds, you can read the info on the band, contact a shelter, vet, or even google sometimes, and they will be abel to contact the place which the bird was banded at, then they'll be able to contact you, so you can get your bird back.
My parrots all have them.
ONe time, it ACTUALLY came in handy! :)

There wouldn't be an internet database - just a site where you can find general information on leg band numbers. The numbers only mean something to the person who applied the band - it's just their own way of identifying the birds. You will want to remove the band. It's not useful now anyway. Leg bands can cause horrible injuries. Sometimes they get too tight, but mostly they end up getting caught in things. A panicked bird with a stuck leg band can really injure itself. I once saw an amazon that nearly ripped its foot off when it's leg band got stuck.

RE:
What is the band on a parakeet's leg for?
I have two new parakeets and one of them has a band around its leg and the other doesn't. What does that mean?

Breeders band their birds for identification purposes. Most exotic birds are required to be banded to prove they were bred in captivity and not caught from the wild. The bird with no band could either have been captured from the wild, or just came from a bad breeder who wasn't registered to breed and therefore didn't band his birds. I'd have the bird checked by a vet for any parasites or diseases just to be safe.

It is a identy leg band and it is programed in to a computer in case you bird was ever lost if some one found it before it flew it self to death they could take it to a local pet store and run the numbers and it would get back to you.

Some are trackable bands to show who the breeder was. Also should have year of birth. Google bird bands and it should give you all the information that you want.
