I heard somewhere that if you drink coffee, it ruins your singing voice. If that's true, is it permanent and (if not) how long does it take till you're voice to get back to normal? I was just wondering when I have an audition, if it would be okay to drink a cup of coffee the morning of...

No it does not. I had to perform a role with the children's opera for an audience with a disgusting virus last week. The only thing that made me perk up and not sound like a choking duck was coffee! And yes, I had cream and sugar (something I have heard uneducated answerers tell people not to have before singing). So that doesn't hurt you. As a matter of fact, the warmth actually gets all that crud off the chords and is a good quick fix in my book. In the morning if I must sing, it is a must have! If it doesn't bother you, why not!

People always have the worst wives tales when it comes to singing. Don't drink hot water, don't drink cold water, don't eat cheese, don't eat dirt. LOL! Anything to get the focus off of what matters. What matters is WHAT WORKS FOR YOU! If you have good vocal habits, drinks should be the least of your worries (unless you are allergic to it). It will not ruin your voice, and you will not have to wait for your voice to "get back to normal". Caffeine is not like cigarettes. In moderation, caffeine is ok. The bulk of the liquids you should drink is, of course water. ANY KIND. Warm, lukewarm, cold. Whatever works for you. I have any kind of water around before I go on stage. And yes. Sometimes it happens to be cold (another wives tale I've read)! I drink cold water if I am burning up, and it doesn't affect me vocally. So have that cup of coffee. If you think it will vocally do you some good, go for it. One cup of coffee will definitely not hurt you vocally. Don't believe the wives tales. You do what's best for you.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/wGQjy

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

Yes, but not permanently. It isn't the coffee that will do this, but the caffiene IN the coffee...it dehyrdates you and your vocal cords. This can affect the quality of your singing voice.

It's alright to drink coffee, but make sure you drink plenty of water afterwards to rehydrate.

Excellent question. I find that I occasionally need a hot drink, e.g. coffee, due to my own sinus congestion, but easy does it--helpful as heat is to the sinuses, it is rough on the larynx, per Roger Love. Something moderately cool to chase it can be useful immediately prior to the session.

I talked to a professional singer who sung at the Metropolitan Opera House many times. He told me that you should avoid drinking any liquid or food as close as thirty minutes before you are going to sing. If you have to have a drink, let it be water and lukewarm. It is also a good idea to avoid hot or cold liquids within two hours of singing. (Of course, avoid having hot coffee burn your tongue or throat that day. ME)

I think i've heard that too but it's not permanent because that's crazy. it's hot and it warms you up and you can add cream and sugar it coats your cords and your voice will be back that same day after you drink the coffee not have a burning sensation like it does me when i eat chips because I like hot stuff like hot cheeto fries and crunchy so it take my voice longer to get back to normal like a few days. so it wouldn't take your voice that long because it's hot but with no peppers.

My son is a singer in a band, and judging by the amount of coffee he drinks, it has no effect at all.

it doesn't seem to effect mine, especially if you put a little whiskey in it. milk and other dairy products will coat your throat and effect your singing, but i'm not sure about coffee
