Sasparilla (also called sarsaparilla) is a vine, the roots of which are processed for flavoring in both carbonated beverages such as root beer and as an herbal supplement in homeopathic medicine.

In the US, Target's store grocery brand Archer Farms supposedly sells a sasparilla beverage (spelled that way, too), but I haven't confirmed that myself.

I had some sarsaparilla about a month ago, at a street fair, made on the spot rather than bottled. (Mr. Maryn had a birch beer but he thought it tasted kind of Pepto-Bismol-ish.)

A fast search with that spelling reveals several companies that appear to bottle it. Find the one nearest you, because shipping won't be cheap! What a great gift for a good grandfather, huh?

I don't remember the name exactly. I think it was called "Sioux City Sarsaparilla". It's a local company in Iowa. Try doing a search for it.

Sorry that's all the help I can be.

try caneandreed.com or briar.com. There are numerous other sites you can google too. It is an old fashioned sassafras based soda. Which should be easy to order on-line if you can't find it locally.

I LOVED this stuff as a kid!

I've seen it in specality markets here in NY. I think Polar and Dr. Brown's make a form of it. Otherwise, go to www.hometowngrocers.com to see if they can get you some.
