My new cat Magic, aged 1-2yrs, is going insane inside and looks longingly out of the window. RSPCA general advice is to keep new cats in for 3-4weeks before letting them go out. However she seems really bright and really loves to be near me, but despite lots of toys and playtime etc is clearly bored and would love outside. Is 10 days too short a time to have had her before letting her out?

I Never let my cats outside.....however once I did have a cat who did the whole crying let me outta here routine so I leash trained him and he LOVED it, he even went on walks with me!! Also you didn't mention is your female spayed? If not that may be why she is wanting out, and unless you want to deal with kittens I wouldn't advise letting her outside.

Some people NEVER let their cats outside.

I would suggest, if you EVER plan on having your cat a indoor cat the less they see of outside, the better! 'Cause I made the mistake of letting my two cats see the out doors.. HAH! Why dya think they're outdoor cats now? They'll whine, and meow at the door if you let them see outside just twice.

You'll pretty much HAVE to make them outdoor pets-- however in the "city" that can be more of a problem than the "country".. Because in the "country" they can't get run over as easily, or find a "new home" as easily. But in the "city" there's cars blarin' all over, and alotta people who'd easily steal your cat.

SO I would suggest if you live in the "city" , indoor cat 100%, but if you're stuck on outdoors, then be stubborn and go ahead.

There is no reason for a pet cat to go outdoors, EVER! As the above answerer said, there are too many things that can happen outdoors. I have had pet cats all my 53 years and not one has ever set foot outdoors. They all lived to ripe old ages- the longest was 17 1/2 yrs old! And not one ever got "sick" until right before it was its time to go. Your cat WILL get used to being in and soon will not even think about or miss the great outdoors!

I know in the UK most people let their cats go outdoors and you probably want to do that too.

Do you know where her former home was? She might want to return there if you let her out too soon.

Make sure you feed her twice a day and keep her in for another week or two. If she is accustomed to having "dinner" at dusk she will probably return for that when you let her out. I am not against "outdoor" cats and I do feel that all cats should be in after dark.

Get her a cat harness and do the outdoors together. Or build a 'run' for her in the back that's escape proof. Anything else runs the danger of having her killed accidentally or on purpose. There are bad neighbors who kill cats, kids who try to, cars who won't see her on the road, dogs running loose that go for anything that moves, and other dangers that will shorten her life down to nothing if she gets in the wrong place at the wrong time.

i once had a cat who did the same , and i let her out , she was too clever to actually get back home after playing ! . give her a try , start by taking her out while holding her , see her reaction , if she moves alot wantin to let go of ur arms then let her out , but if she stays in ur arms watching things while ur still holding her then she is just enjoyin to be out and she is less bored than u think she is ! thats when u give her more time at home ebfore letting her out . hope i helped
