a place where proper training isnt learned. they hand out belts if you hand out money.they lock you into long contracts in which if you break you have to pay a huge fee. also belt testing is often times easy and not truly earned. sometimes the instructor isnt even a qualified instructor they'll either lie about there training(i have so and so black belt and fought in so and so tournament, and never did), make up their own style in which they are automatically self promoted grandmaster, or trained with mysterious master over in some far away hidden mountain tops.
one mcdojo i saw on the internet showed an 8yr old receive his black belt in ONE YEAR of training, another place the black belt test was around $1000.
its bad because it gives be false confidence. idunno about you but if i am going to learn how to protect myself i want to learn that, i dont wanna have to defend myself thinking i have the tools to and then get my face smashed in because i was just attending an aerobics class.
also mcdojo owners are profitting off of people in need, especially in self defense, how can they sleep at night knowing what they are teaching is b.s. they could end up getting someone seriously hurt
EDIT: yung bullet that was one of the most disturbing videos i've ever seem in my life

The sensei at McDojos place their earning money above teaching their style well. So, they water the teachings down as not to loose unserious students. After generations of McDojodom, you get blackbelts trained at such "blackbelt academies" teaching who know very little about real martial arts. Sadly, they still call their styles by the original names, even though what they teach can hardly be considered to resemble the original "martial" style.

Mcdojo is a slang term for franchise karate schools. McDonald's = franchise restaurant. Mcdojo = franchise Karate school. Cnote described very well what these schools are like. Know how to recognize them and stay away.

I never heard the phrase until I came into here... and I laughed for a good 20 minutes... Learn from a good school, then go to a really really bad one and you will understand completely
