hi there are some hazel trees growing at the bottom of the garden and for the first time since they were sown ..about 10 years ago..there seams to be a largish crops appearing.
Some have dropped off already due to the wind..if i gather these "windfall" nuts will they ripen ..otherwise when should the nuts on the trees be ready to crack open ?

Yes if the ones that fell off are green shelled, you could leave them in the sun to ripen but if the shells are brown theres no need. Hazel nuts do not crack open..you will have to crack them yourself or they will turn rotten.

store the ones still on the tree they should be ready to pick soon; pick a sample every few days to choose the best time to harvest the rest, eat the ones on the ground now in case they are damaged and don't keep.

Hazelnuts are gathered starting in September. The fallen nuts are normally collected and dried but I don't see why you can't eat them just as they fall.

Yes they will ripen. Keep in a dry airy place and wait until they brown.
