I prefer carry on you may have to get thoroughly inspected at the security but I would hate to have to wait to pick up luggage. Carry on just seems so much better. And you don't have to worry about luggage getting lost because it will be right with you.

what I have found in my travels is that you can either take the extra time at check-in by carrying your bags on OR you can take the time after to pick up at the carousel. They do a lot of random inspections now for carry-ons- so I'd rather not hassle with lugging my bags to the plane and taking time to store them and get them down, etc. Let them take care of it and spend a few minutes on arrival to pick up from baggage claim. Have fun in OR!

I'd carry on, definitely. You'll have to check with your airline though because you may have trouble bringing on the sleeping bag (because of size, whether it fits into the carry-on dimensions, etc.) - could you just get one there?

And if you can't fit the helmet in your carryon, just wear it until you pass through your check-in.

It's better to carry on if you can. Less hassle checking in and your bags can't get accidentally shipped somewhere else.
