Well it's really really great on the Dismal scale of swamps. Most swamps only rate a 2 or a 3 in terms of Dismality. (Yes, that is a word. *cough* Work with me here). Yet the Great Dismal Swamp has a score that exceeds Dismality and almost approaches lethalization (also a word..... yes.. trust me here. *cough*). So rather than changing the name to the Lethal Swamp, the decided that exceding such a range of dismality allowed the swamp to be referred to as GREAT therefore adding to its name and allowing it to become..........
The Great Dismal Swamp!!
And THAT is the rest of the story. *curtsies*

A short history is given in the reference. You see that just its size makes it great, not to mention that George Washington and the Underground Railroad are involved in its history. It is also a very beautiful place.
From wikipedia:
The refuge consists of over 111,000 acres (500 km²) of forested wetlands. Lake Drummond, a 3,100 acre (13 km²) natural lake, is located in the heart of the swamp. Outside the boundaries of the National Refuge, the state of North Carolina has preserved and protected additional portions of the swamp, as the Great Dismal Swamp State Natural Area.
