Hi my budgie (4 years old approx.) has an increase in urine (the clear part of the dropping), I removed the veggies from his diet for almost 2 weeks (as they were fairly new since he had been a seed junky), but there was no change, so I gave them back. I had also switched him to bottled water from tap, so I tried changing that back, with no change. He is happy, active, talking, singing, eating well etc. Has this happened to anyone elses budgie, or any idea why this is? Something natural I could try? There isn't an avian vet anywhere remotely close to me, and frankly the vets around here know probably less than me about budgies. Thanks for any advice!

I actually have been doing quite a bit of research, I said that he has an increase in urine (I know that the urates is the white stuff), I'm pretty sure that the clear stuff is called the urine? I think so anyway, now you have me doubting myself!LOL

In birds, droppings are composed of three elements, feces, urates and urine. The droppings are stored in the cloaca, the common emptying chamber for the gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive tract. Feces are produced in the intestinal tract, and are normally green or brown in color. Urine and urates are produced in the kidneys. Normal birds on a diet that has a low water content only produce a very small volume of liquid urine. The majority of the waste from the kidneys will be in the form of semi-solid, white/beige urates.

The urates seen in the droppings consist of uric acid, which is the form in which the majority of nitrogenous waste is eliminated. This method is very efficient, since greater amounts of waste can be concentrated in a semi-solid form as compared to a liquid urine. The avian kidney always produces some urine. This urine serves to flush the semi-solid urates out of the kidney and into the cloaca.

It is normal at times to see more watery liquid in your budgie if they have needed an increase in water. This occurs in hot weather and normally during summer months. If you are still concerned about your budgie a quick call to your vet will help and if they feel it is best to see your bird then a test of the excresions can be done to rule out kidney infections and other illness.

What you need to do is Educate yourself better on which part is which. The clear you are discribing has nothing to do with the urates. Do some research on which part is actually the urine and which part is the actual feces, you'll be amazed that what you call the clear, is really NOT what you think it is. Mind you, just cause humans have clear liquid, don't mean birds do, LOL!!!!

My question to you, do you actually see your keet drinking lots of water? If you do, this is NOT common. Most people don't actually see their birds drink any water.

Depending on the diet you have fed your bird, this may be a sign of kidney distress. As i said, you don't say what color the fecal matter is either. Since you are changing this birds diet to much to tell, this could be a sign of kidney problems in your bird. Try to maintain a steadier diet with your bird.

Good Luck!

The Budgie has probably increased its urine output because of increased water intake. Was there a change in the bird's environment, Is it hotter, is the climate different or is there anything different than before.
Increased water intake can be a sign of illness, however there should be other signs such as molting or picking and chewing feathers. The bird may have diabetes if it isn't taking in more water.

Only a vet could tell you this one as you have done all the stuff I would have. GLad you gave back the veggies. She may just be drinking more as it is summer. Watch as the weather cools to see if it changes.

Fresh vegetables maintain much fluids, so birds do urinate more,However urates are the white part you see,not the liquid/wettness around the feces/dark green.

Food color's can change the color of the birds feces too.
Red pellet's for example can make for brown dropping. ( red and green color make brown)

from your words, your bird is fine.

My cockatiel does that also, sometimes, and my parakeets that I had did the same. I think it is mostly when they drink more water. If it doesn't act sick, I wouldn't worry about it, too much. They just drink more water, at times.
