What about your holy book? It too is your idol. "Have no other Gods before me!" Yet, don't many of you worship these things? Don't Catholics even make the virgin mary a God. How can you convince anyone that you have found the way when you disobey your own God? What say you?

The irony is that your protests were asked and answered over a thousand years ago in the old iconoclast debates of the church - and you aren't even aware of it.

To put it simply, Christians venerate (as in "respect") the symbols you speak of, but they do not worship them. When Christians hold a crucifix to pray, they do not believe it will magically intervene in their lives. When they kiss or bow in front of an icon, they do not think it is possessed by a deity. They use these symbols as memory-aids, as prompts, as ways to focus on God. And they treat them with respect in a symbolic way, to demonstrate how they would like to treat God.

I hope this clears up the confusion for you.

You have a good question their. I have studied idolitry I don't know if this will be a good answer for you, but its the best I have come up with.

The Bible is God's word and instructions to us. The book is not to be worshipped, its is a book of instructions to us from God.

As far as all the other stuff like the cross and the statues and other things those are symbols, and should be treated as such. It is very easy to worship the symbols because we understand them, but you are right that is idolitry, and clouds our eyes from God.

Idolitry is easy to fall into, and it can be done with the best of intentions. Just remember that all the symbols and books are tools to help you better worship god, but also remember if you don't have any of these tools you can still worship god.

You brought up an interesting point, that I have never understood. Why Catholics revere Mary as they do. Don't get me wrong, she deserves much respect for being the Mother of Jesus. It has always seemed to me that they worship her as much as Jesus. I would welcome anyone to explain the Catholic way explaining Mary, the Mother of Jesus. I do not in anyway mean any disrespect to our Father's mother, but am curious.

As far as the bible or a cross, angels, or any other item, those things are not for worshiping. If they are, then you are sinning. People that wear a cross generally are doing so, to show their belief in God Almighty, their faith, if you will. The bible, just by being read, is not idol worship. In the Old Testament you even have people that worshiped the sun. Hence, the term, sun worshipers. It was a pagan ritual. To have collections of various items, isn't worshiping them, as long as we are not praying to them as such. I hope this has helped explain it some. Thank you for asking this question.

An idol is something someone worships. As Christians, we don't worship or bow down to the Bible. We read it and learn from it, like people read and learn from many other books. We also don't use crosses, crucifixes, pictures of Jesus, or any other images because they are considered false idols.

Since I'm not Catholic, I wouldn't speak for them.

yaktur, where did you get your information from???

The Bible is the infallible Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and contains every answer to man's problems.
2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:20,21

I Worship The real one God, existing eternally in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
John 10:30; John 14:26;
I respect VIRGIN MARRY very much and i take her Faith as example for obeying GOD .BUT I DON'T WORSHIP HER NOR THE SAINTS because they are human VIRGIN MERRY HIMSELF TOLD THE PEOPLE TO LISTEN AND OBEY JESUS .WE SAVED BY JESUS'S BLOOD and not his followers we must not turn ayes from JESUS CHRIST our GOD AND SAVIOR.

The Cross is a symbol, not an idol. I do not worship it. The Bible is my textbook. I do not worship it, either. I study it. You do have a point about the virgin Mary, though. I am not Catholic.

I'm soooooo moved by your concern for our practice of "true" Christianity...thank you, thank you, thank you!!

By the way, the cross around my neck isn't an idol...it's a reminder. And the Bible isn't an idol...it's an instruction book.

Our relationship with Mary is that of a child to a blessed Mother who was given to us as Jesus gave her to John at the Cross.

She is our spiritual Mother (Revelation 12:17 -- And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ).........

........and she wants to pray for us.

I say you.............need to seek some knowledge.

If your refering to the Bible
The Bible is God's word. The word of God. Jesus is refered to as the Word. Jesus is also called The Truth. God's word is holy because it is the word of God. Sure not the pages or ink, but the content is 'God breathed'

About the cross
If you want to argue that symbols are idols then you better include Jesus Christ into the mix.
"26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."

27Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28This is my blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom." "

God uses symbols to communicate his truth. Because He is a God of communication. Sure you can take this idea too far, but you can do that with anything...

Most Christians use Jesus, the apostles, saints, the pope, Mary, a cross, a bible, a church - any thing or ideal - as an idol.

It's all idolatry. Most are just too blind to realize it.
