However, she was offered a job at a dog daycare kennel and turned it down FLAT!!! Guess what they wanted her to do?

Yes, please excuse me for my last comment. It's just frustrating to see so many people think dogs want to be read to. While I could care less if the "Dog Lovers" like me or not.

I just threw up a little in my mouth, hold on........
WTF!!!! Now, I have heard it all.
I am sorry but reading fairy tales to dogs is absolutely ridiculous. Where in the world do people get these ridiculous ideas from? Somehow, I do NOT believe reading fairy tales to dogs is treating them as dogs, what they are doing is assigning the dog human qualities. I really wish people would learn that a dog is a dog and not a furry child!!!

Also, I would like to add, the more we talk to a stressed animal the more we re-enforce the stress, fears and anxieties, so reading to a dog that is stressed and fearful will not help the situation, it will only make it worse.

You really surprise me sometimes. One minute you talk a lot of sense and give excellent advice and the next you say something that shows a complete lack of understanding of dogs.
Don't you talk to your own dog's? Don't you talk to your puppies? What do you do when a puppy is unsure or a dog is nervous? Most owners talk to them, If they are the gushy sentimental type they might say "Oh don't be scared, come to Mummy, there's a good baby" I'd say, "It's alright little one, I'm not going to hurt you, come here, there's a good boy" What does the dog hear? Just the tone of voice, If older he might recognise Come & good, but the rest of the words are just sounds that us funny animals make! We use our voices to put the animal at ease, don't we? The more stressed the animal the more we would talk to it. Reading a book or reciting your National anthem or just talking to the dog in a normal conversational way it doesn't matter, as long as the tone of voice and the body language are calm then the dog should react positively and calm down, and gain confidence.
What could be more stressful for a dog than being in kennels or in a day-care facility? They can smell other dogs all around them but most of the time they can't see them or interact with them. They've no understanding of why they are there, they have suddenly found themselves in these strange surroundings and their pack isn't there!! It doesn't matter if 'their pack' is a loving family of pet owners who will be back in an hour, they don't know what that means! It's 'pack' and that means safety to a dog. Good kennel maids talk to their charges in the same way that good nurses talk to their patients!
I'm a strong believer in treating an animal as an animal no baby talk and thinking of it as a child and the stupid fashions of clothes for dogs makes me sick, but I'd say on this you may have entirely missed the point! If your daughter also failed to understand what the reading would accomplish then I feel sorry for her. They may have started doing it with the idea of entertaining the dogs as you would a group of children, or some-one in charge really does understand dog's and it's really then more brains than money! pack animals, dogs or humans benefit from attention and conversation, far more than they do from being ignored and given drugs when upset, ill or lonely!

What is ML? Sorry not familiar with the abbreviation.

Sounds like a strange strange job....

You laugh but, think of it this way she could have had a job and been making money and putting away for college.

I totally read to my dogs when they are little. Not so much because I think they're into the story, but because I'm a big reader and like to think of it as me helping the puppy get used to me.

I admit some things that people do are a little extreme, but so long as the dogs are happy and healthy, who really cares?

Usually reading to dogs is done by children who have trouble reading, and its for the kids benefit, not the dogs.

Theyre great to read to to help overcome nervousness and such, but it does nothing for the dog except give some interaction time-its no better or worse than any similiar type of interaction.

Edit: Good for you. Youve got money, youve got a smart daughter, and you seem to be a bit of a *****!
If people want this done whats the big deal? Its just one way of interacting with the dogs. There is no reason not to do it. It has been done for years.

Well, I guess some people really want to pameper dogs! Yes, I agree it is a little strange, but let's not talk dirty here! I totally agree that dogs could do perfect without books, you got me there. Well, at least they are not giving them daily perfumed soaks and a manicure! (Or are they?) ;)

And you too, evil st lady, for having the brains and passing the genes on to your kids.

Kudos to both of you.
