when talking about 8 glasses a day, normally the glass referred to is 8 ounces.
Replacement approach. The average urine output for adults is 1.5 liters a day. You lose close to an additional liter of water a day through breathing, sweating and bowel movements. Food usually accounts for 20 percent of your total fluid intake, so if you consume 2 liters of water or other beverages a day (a little more than 8 cups) along with your normal diet, you will typically replace the lost fluids.
Dietary recommendations. The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

I believe the 8 glasses a day are supposed to be about 250ml. By 8 glasses, they mean those taller, thin glasses. Like the size of a medium McDonald's cup. Ideally, you should be drinking about a gallon of water a day.

here is a good rule of thumb for you... buy a bottle of 1.5 Litres water, that is what they mean by 6-8 glasses of water per day. I am not advocating buying lots of bottled water. Just the one, if you don't already have a measuring jug. If so, then it's 1.5 litres per day, divided into 8 portions.
The bottle would help you as you won't have to worry about finicky measuring cups. Just fill from the tap, and drink to your satisfaction.

Ok, so when my children were tiny babies I had to measure out milk for them in a bottle. A full baby's bottle is 8 ounces which is equal to roughly half a pint.

This is based on a 250mL or 8oz glass. You need at least a quart (or a liter) of water a day, more if you are active or eat a lot of protein.
