Hi everyone i have a 12 year old staff named 'chuggy' he became unwell yesterday because i caught him eating in my next door neighbours bins because they're to lazy to put them out on the day or keep them locked up.

Well anyway after he got really ill and started acting strange: wasn't eating, eyes drowzy wouldn't go to sleep. I thought it was time.

However this afternoon he was sick a couple of times and he went a crap and that. Then i realised he had blood coming from his anus!! So i called up the vet and told him what happened and he said its gone off food which has gave him bad digestive problems.

Im stuck for what to do, he looks much better now and is drinking water, and his body is fighting back i know it is. He is beginning to get better i can see it.

Should i stay by his side and let his body compensate, because this can be good for future purposes or should i go down the vets and get him a shot of antibiotics or drugs. Which in my opinion he doesn't really need?

Well Firstly For The NExt Few Hours Until Tomorow

Make Sure He Is Drinking Lots Of Water

Give Him a Nice Warm Place To Sleep And just Let Him Be

If He Isnt Any Better and You Feel That Its Worse

Definatly Take Him To The Vets To diagnose the Situation

After all They Have Equipment And the Brains To Detect Things We Wouldnt Even Think Or inspecting

Good Luck With Your Dog

Get Well Soon Chuggy !!

Fresh, red blood from anus means the dog is bleeding from the end of the gastro-intestinal tract. If the stomach or the intestine were bleeding: the blood would be digested and look black, tar-like.

Usually this is secondary to colitis which is a food allergic reaction. The fact that your dog had some rubbish from the bin could very well be the cause for this. If so, 24h starvation and plenty of fresh water will do the trick.

However, because the dog is old and was quite unwell, I think it would be wise to seek veterinary opinion.

Good luck!

Six years old is pushing it - most breeders (responsible ones at any rate) stop breeding at around the five year mark depending on how often a b*tch had been bred previously. Some go on to breed at seven or eight (again depending on the b*tch, her health, how often she was bred, etc - most breeders who do this are breeding the male at any rate, not the b*tch) but that's very rare as pregnancy and whelping can put a strain on the b*tch's already old body. Unless your dog is an AKC registered Ch. with prime bloodlines (IE perfect example of her breed as chosen by impartial judges via showing) and an excellent disposition (as determined by behavioral testing such as Canine Good Citizen Tests) i would not breed her. There are thousands of bully breeds in shelters that are put to death, and many more on the way what with the BSL being passed in certain areas. And with the economy being the way it is, forget selling the pups for any sort of profit. Loads of people will not be splurging on a dog at this point in time. At least, not the good ones! Spay her now and let her live the rest of her life in peace.

Get him to the vet. Had one of my dogs do this, and even though I got the proper medical care the next day after she showed signs of being sick, she still got a secondary infection that needed a second vet visit.

This has probably got your dog's natural ability to fight of sickness lowered, so a vet's visit is a must. Get them on meds the vet recommends and be sure the dog takes them all if your given a prescription.

It sounds like he has got over the worst of it and his body is learning to battle against what he ate, i would have thought that giving him drugs, esp ones that the vet didnt want to give him when he was worse off would stop his body from doing the good stuff it has been doing.

I would let him be, but feed him so nice fresh food such as Chicken with rice, it has let fat and artificial additives than dog food, and the starch in the rice will help with his digestion.

My sisters Lab ate its own bed about a week ago and she took it straight to the vet who was really concerned. He suggested a change in diet and to monitor bowel movements, vomiting, etc.

One question he did ask was if there was any blood, which there wasn't. I'm not a vet but i think he should be a little more concerned, especially as your dog is passing blood from its backside. I would take your dog to the vet again.

Ask your vet what he would recomend you dont want to take the chance of losing him do you. I had a dog and she had a puppy and after she had she started acting funny she would use go potty eat sleep or anything all she did was let the puppy nurse. 10 days after she gave birth she past away we were goin to take her to the vet that day if she was still acting strange. :( But you see we stil have her beaustiful baby and thats all we have left of her. Dont take the chance of loosing him.:)

Hi,

I'd pop him down to the vets just to get him checked over. I lost my cross staffy last November, she was 11 but her time had come. Do what you can to make the time you both have left comfortable and enjoyable for the two of you.

if the vets told u that u should give him some kinda medecine then u should. dont just say hes good and he doesnt need anything , cuz u never know what could happen , so u just take care fo him and do whats best for him . dont risk it cuz there might be something wrong and u simply dont see it

good luck

Dogs are notorious for being opportunistic eaters, and they can usually vomit out anything they ought not to have ingested.

Your dog will probably appreciate your company more than the drugs. The dog doesn't associate medicine with getting better, with most animals, the rule is less stress the better.
