I'm 12 and my I have trouble at school with near-sightedness. In order to read anything, I have to squint very hard. My mom has chastised me all my life to take care with my eyes, and even though I might've not been able to prevent it, I don't really have the heart to tell her that I have vision problems. I heard of something called the Bates method. Can anyone help me out?

First of all, I have never heard of the Bates system. So I am really not answering your question. I looked it up but it was beyond me. Second of all, do take care of your eyes. This is how, don't play video games in a dark room. I did this until my optrician told me not to, he said that it fatigues the eyes. Second, this means don't read for great lengths of time. Like read a book or so for only about a half hour then go do something less straining, then go back to it. Third, if you have allergies don't rub your eyes viciously, try a cold cloth over the eyes for about 5 minutes.

The thing about your mother is go fifty fifty. Tell her that if you get the glasses that you need, you will take the best care of them, do the things I said or what the doctor says. Ask you teacher or school nurse if there is a program for free frames or eye exams. There is one in my town. Have her sit with you and another adult, this will have the other adult give her advice too. Also tell her to go to United Way if she can't get help with financing them.

I understand the whole situation. When I was about your age
(sounds bad I know, make me old sounding), the school had switched the eye exam. I had memorized it because it was an eye test. I didn't want to fail, because they switched it, I couldn't cheat, so I had to get glasses. Still wear them, one of the best things that happened.

Hopes this helps,
Beadie

First, to the contrary what most people will tell you, your vision can get better. I personally suffered from bad vision and now I don't and no thanks to the eye doctors!!!

Second, you have to check your eyes to see if you suffer from bad vision. You should avoid squinting because squinting can make your vision worse!

The original Bates method was created by ophthalmologist doctor William H. Bates and consisted of various eye exercises and practices for vision improvement. Due to the inconsistency of his work, some claims contradictory to the science and some potentially dangerous practices (like staring directly into the Sun), his method was rejected by mainstream ophthalmologists.

Later on, the Bates method was adopted and modified by many people to eliminate potentially dangerous practices and nowadays these eye exercises are completely safe. They are still debated by many people, but they do work!

Here is a program that can help you out with your problem:

You have to tell your mom. You can't go to an eye doctor and get an exam by yourself.
She shouldn't blame you too much. It happens. It could even be genetic. Everyone in my family wears glasses or contacts, it's just something that's passed down.

The longer you wait to tell your mom the worse your eyes are going to get, which means the thicker your lenses will have to be. Tell her now. She loves you and she will want to make sure you can see.

If you are so afraid to tell her then go to your school nurse and tell the school nurse you are having too much trouble reading and she will give you an eye exam then the school will notify your mom by phone or letter.

If you are nearsighted it is your mother's fault, not yours, because nearsightedness is genetic just like eye colour, nose shape etc. There is no way to prevent it and nothing you did made it happen.

Tell your mom you can't see and have her arrange for you to see an eye doctor.

The Bates' method is bunk and doesn't work.

Sorry, you have to get glasses. Get over the fact that it will break your mother's heart that you actually don't have perfect vision--it is more important that you are able to see properly.

If you get Lasik by a civilian before entering ROTC, it can be a disqualifying factor. Suck it up with the BC glasses for a while and let them get you PRK
