Yes, if you are in a secluded area and trying to get help- people are more willing to involve themselves when they think it is a more controlled (and thus safer) situation.
In a crowded area, yelling "Fire" will just cause a panic and people running away from the scene.
I suggest (and hopefully you will be safe and not need help) yelling "fire" in a less dense area and "help" when there are enough people around that someone would be likely to help, because they are within sight...
Just remember that case where a person was beat to death while others watched, thinking all the others will call 9-1-1

No. What if someone calls the Fire Department?. Hopefully you are never in that situation. A person screaming for help gets a quicker response from Police, than someone yelling fire. As far as receiving assistance from anyone else, if they don't see a fire, they'll just keep walking.

Nope. If you are in distress it doesn't matter what you yell. If a good samaritan hears a call for help he/she will respond regardless of the nature of your emergency. Unfortunately there are also those who won’t help for whatever the reason. But yelling "fire" verses something else isn’t going to bring help any faster.

Personally I have all ways heard that it is.
Just think how many people have Rubber Necks when you pass an accident on the highway.

It may actually have an adverse effect causing people to turn and run the other way.
