Is there anyway to curb this problem? The problem is rampant. People finish their cigarette in their car and then discreetly
drop it to the ground. Would I be charged with assault if I got out of my car, picked up the burning cigarette, and tossed it back into their car? I again come back to the question, what can be done about this
problem of littering, selfish smokers?

I guess Nothing Learned decided to delete his/her response. Of course I know that dropping cigarettes on the ground is littering. But what can I, everyday citizen, do about it?! Do I have to video tape them? We need a compaign of some sort to shame these
people into respecting our cities and towns.

It makes me angry too, and I smoke. My folks have been in Texas since it was still a part of Mexico and dangit, this is my land, don't litter in my house!

Unfortunately, you don't have the right to toss a burning anything in someone's car. I don't know if it'd be considered assault, but it'd be a crime I'm sure.

There ARE laws and where I live, they are enforced. Littering is one approach to tickets and if it hasn't rained for a while, they attach possible arson type charges. As far as Nothing Learneds answer, I know of NO smoker who has gotten any free medical service. The taxes are spent elsewhere and not on healthcare.

They can be fined for littering - in Pennsylvania it's $300.

This action is illegal in many areas, and citations have been issued. In Indiana, it's called, Flick it, Ticket.

Get their tag number if you can and report them for littering.

Not a damn thang. Don't watch if it hurts your precious feelings.

My grandfather lived to be 108 yrs old. You know why? Cause he minded his own damn business.

How about you worry about you and let the rest of the people decide for themselves. BTW if you try that I hope you are willing to support the rights of the person in the car to kick your butt.

One more time: minorities have rights, whites don't;
women have rights, men don't;
SMOKERS have rights, non-smokers don't.
Until the Liberals permit the laws of the Constitution to be upheld, there just are no rights.
What should be done is to force smokers to pay for their medical bills THEMSELVES; no more freebies for them. THAT would change their attitudes overnight.
But, yes, if you tossed the butts back, you might be charged with assault.
Especially since smokers tend to be drinkers, druggies, violent...but then, that is probably because they are more likely to develop alzheimers, etc., than non-smokers (according to Yahoo news).
