I see many claim it is to school the "Christians", so that they will learn that they are wrong, and that there is no "God". If that is so, does that not make them as guilty of proselytizing as is accused of Christianity?

These days, I am not sure.

Initially, I was here out of curiosity. Then, when I saw that many people here have some serious misconceptions about atheists, I thought to stick around and help them to understand that we are just people.

That is fruitless however. Those who have their hearts and minds set against acceptance of others will more than likely always be so.

Now, I don't know why I'm here. This place has gotten me in parts angry, frustrated, discouraged, disgusted, and depressed. I suppose I stay because I have met a few really cool people (not just atheists). It's like going out of the house and running into rude people on the roads and in the stores.. and just when you are about to become a hermit, some stranger sends you a smile and you decide to give it another try. That's why I'm here. To keep on hoping...

I am NOT here however to "school the Christians" or anyone into dropping/changing their faith. I am also NOT here to be converted. I am NOT here because I am a closet-believer :p

You're asking why people with religious differences don't get along. My friend, they never have and they never will. How many wars have been fought over this same issue? As Christians, we should know to love our fellow man regardless of their beliefs. You can't whip someone into believing. If someone is ready, they will look for the information without us being overly assertive. We should open the door and if they choose to go thrugh it, it will be their choice. In the meantime, understand that others will believe what they choose no matter how we feel about it. If they choose to attack us, it is only words for now. Just don't be the one doing the attacking. We are Christians and we don't do that. Although I'm always up for a good debate.

Many try to debunk christians and what they believe. No religion is right or wrong it is just what we believe. I don't know why people don't understand that. It is not what you know but more so what you believe because I can honestly say nobody really knows any truth within their religion. I BELIEVE God is existing and that He is forever watching. I have experienced His spirit and encountered His light. I also believe atheists are misinformed and misguided and I only hope they find the light. At least they are in the R & S Section answering and asking question..maybe they will soon be enlightened by the words of the wise.

And atheists have never schooled me on anything. I take them to school and give them a lesson on religion with all the respect I can muster.

My motivation is to help out someone who has a genuine question. If I believe that I can give a suitable answer than I post it.

I don't think you can compare posting on the R&S feed on yahoo answers as the same as going door to door and country to country trying to convert people. I have no guilt.

I do it for myself no one else. I took six classes in comparative religions in college and I'm interested in the topic in an academic sense. Do I believe in deities? No. Do I believe in heaven and hell? No. I have my own opinions on religion and that's fine, other people have theirs and that is fine too. If one asks in general do you believe this or that I will answer with my opinions like everyone else; if the questioner doesn't care for the response, well that is their issue not mine. If a question asks for an opinion from a specific target group other than atheists I pass it by.

I certainly challenge christians from time to time... but I enjoy good natured debate and some humor and playfulness, too. That goes for people of many different faiths, not just other atheists... I even like some of the christians who are also bright.

I suppose when I challenge a fundie, it probably looks like a conversion effort...

It's not "guilt" when you're correct.

Insisting that everyone believe that 2+2=3 would be morally wrong. Teaching that 2+2=4 is perfectly okay.

Teaching religious beliefs is wrong. Pointing out that there is no god is perfectly fine.

You'd think that people who claim to believe in moral absolutes wouldn't have such a hard time understanding this.

Believe it or not I came here to find out about other faiths, then I found it dominated by Christians and Atheists. I had to join the side with the facts (Atheism).

If it's ant consolation to you, there is no atheist in existence who has ever "schooled" me about God, Christianity, or any matter involving the faith. Quite the opposite.

As an atheist, I come here to correct any misconceptions or stereotypes towards atheism. That's it.
