Ge 2:7----And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Eze 18:4-----Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Since we are living souls and are all sinners when we die the soul that is ourself dies. Jesus promise of a resurrection would be ridiculous if a soul were to live on.

World religions have developed a bewildering array of beliefs about the Hereafter, most of them agree on one basic idea: Something inside a person is immortal and goes on living after death.
Acording to the “Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, often the soul is equated with the total person.” For instance Gen. 2:7 states: God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.” The first man, Adam, was a soul.
The whole person is supported by other scriptures. The Bible speaks of a soul's doing work. Lev.23:30, Soul spoken of as being impatient, irritated, sleepless, fearful, depressed. Judges 16:16, Job 19:2, Ps.119:28, Acts 2:43, Thess. 5:14. At 1 Peter 3:20 it says: “In Noah's day, a few people, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.” Nothing in these scriptures indicates that the soul is some immaterial entity that lives on after death.
The Bible states: “The soul that is sinning, it itself will die.” Eze.18:4, the prophet Elijah “began to ask that his soul might die.” 1 Kings 19:4, Jonah “kept asking that his soul might die.” When he was in the belly of the large fish. The soul dies when the person dies; it is not immortal. Since a person is a soul, to say that someone died is to say that his soul died.
The Bible shows what man is. He does not have a soul; he is a soul. And because of what mn is, his nature, any hope for future life for the dead depends on a resurrection, a raising up. The promise of a resurrection, not the teaching of the immortality of the soul, is the basis for real hope for the dead.

The Bible shows the soul to be a person or an animal or the life that a person or an animal enjoys.
What does the Bible say that helps us to understand what the soul is?
Gen.2:7 "Jehovah god proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul." ( NOTICE THAT THIS DOES NOT SAY THAT MAN WAS GIVEN A SOUL BUT THAT HE BECAME A SOUL, A LIVING PERSON.)
1Pet 3:20 "In Noah's days...a few people, that is eight souls, were carried safely through the water."
Josh. 11:11 "They went striking every soul that was in it with the edge of the sword." (THE SOUL IS HERE SHOWN TO BE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE TOUCHED BY THE SWORD, SO THESE SOULS COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SPIRITS.)
Can the human souls die?
Ezek. 18:4 "Look! All the souls-to me they belong. As the soul of the father so like wise the soul of the son-to me they belong. the soul that is sinning-it itself will die."
Eccl 9:5,"For the living are conscious that they will die ; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten."
Eccl 9:10 "All that your hand finds to do , do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She'ol, the place to which you are going.

Eccl. 9:5 the living are conscience that they will die but the dead are conscience of nothing at all.
Genesis 1:20 and God went on to say: "Let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls
21and every living soul that moves about.
So everything has a soul or a body.
"The soul that is sinning it it's self will die.
It goes back to his ground and it is gone.

Ezekiel 18:4 - Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.
Romans 5:12 - That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned—.
Since according to Romans we have inherited sin and are all sinners and thus die, the Bible tells us that the soul dies. It doesn't float off to another place, it just is no more, doesn't exist, is gone. Our life is the soul of us, when our life is gone, it's just that - it is no more.

Some people think of the soul as the spiritual part of the body, when you die, it dies with you.
Ps 146:4 His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish. NKJV
His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish.

It is returned to Mother Earth as the energy it was when you were born. It is then recycled OR lingers in despair. Of course, If you reject this idea, then it goes to Heaven to be with the Partridge family and sing happy songs forever!
The point is that any answers will be opinions. Eith from a book or someone's imagination. You will have to die to find out. Don't be in such a hurry to know- you may be disappointed....

We are a three part being,,,,,,,,we are a Spirit (God breathed the breath of life into us), we have a soul, and we live in a body. If we have followed Christ and accepted Him to be our Saviour, our spirit and soul will go to be with Him when our body dies. We will be at peace with Him. At the return of Jesus, our dead bodies will come out of the grave in a wonderful new body that can never be hurt or die again, and our spirt and soul will be re-united with that body. If we are not Christians when we die, out soul and spirit go to the place of torment reserved for the devil and his angels. Our soul, by the way, is comprised of our intellect and our emotions. I hope this helps.

I don't believe in a soul, but just energy, and when we die our energy is released from our body. Our energy goes to the universe unless we have some unfinished business.
