Great Pyrenees have double rear dew claws. Why is that?

Some breeds do not need their dew claws and they often are removed. Great Pyrenees are required to have double dews. It is said that it makes it a little easier for them to get around in the deep snow in their native country and habitat.

On some breeds it is totally optional whether to leave the dew claws or not and a matter of preference of the breeder. Many breeds are not supposed to have rear dew claws.

I'm not sure why they do. Many different breeds do though, such as labs. They aren't necessary and many get them removed when the puppy is very young because they can get in the way and get snatched on many things.

It's something in their genes. Most of them are removed at birth so they don't get ripped off. I'm not sure why they have them .. they're just like our thumbs.
