Old lady up there covers it well, I would add also the huge numbers of soldiers returning after the war increased demand dramatically in the following years-- consider especially that 5 years after the war, many soldiers would have been finishing college, paid for by the GI Bill, so there was a lot of affluence coming into the market. Also, by 1950 they would have established families and 2 or 3 children maybe, thus needing larger, or a first car.
