My host software is windows vista ultimate and on my virtual pc is xp, which I installed on the partitioned hard drive which has got 10gb

The virtual machine could still contract a virus, so yes, you should install an anti-virus, to keep the data on the VM safe. But not doing so will not endanger your host OS (Vista).

In fact, many anti-virus companies use VMs to study viruses and their effects on operating systems.

Your virtual machine should indeed be protected by antivirus, leaving it unprotected could infact endanger your host O/S (Vista) because both are Windows.The problem would not arise if your host O/S was Linux because the Windows virus could not operate in that enviroment.
