I don't know if I spelt it right. Grits? Gritz? Something like that. I know it's a type of food but what is it exactly?

Grits is a type of corn porridge and a food common in the Southern United States consisting of coarsely ground corn. This is similar to many other thick maize-based porridges from around the world such as polenta. It also has a lesser resemblance to farina, a thinner porridge.

Hominy grits is another term for grits, but explicitly refers to grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy.

Grits are made from the milling of corn kernels. The first step in the process is to clean the kernels; then, the grains are steamed for a short time to loosen the tough outer hull. The grain kernel is split, which removes the hull and germ, leaving the broken endosperm. Heavy steel rollers break up the endosperm into granules, which are separated by a screening process. The large-size granules are the grits; the smaller ones become cornmeal and corn flour.:)

It's hominy, which is a type of corn. Grits are ground fine like cream of wheat, and are very bland tasting, but they go good with breakfast items. Grits are very popular down south, and are served with just about everything. To enhance the flavor, you can add butter and/or honey or syrup.

It always amuses me when people not from the South don't know what grits are. They are a white, mealy kind of breakfast food that seems to be exclusive to southern areas of the US. They are great with butter. My mom always makes cheese grits when we have fish for dinner, too.
