No (you'll always hear of some minor problems with these sorts of things (especially from fanboys))

With any system there is a chance the system will fail. But with the PS3 those chances are much lower than with the 360. According to statistics 1 in 3 360's fail while the PlayStation 3 fails much less. If you really want to protect it, they now sell devices that you attach to the back of your system that help cool the system and prevent overheating but this is unnecessary as I haven't heard of a PS3 overheating.

I have yet to have any problems with my PS3 overheating and havn't heard of any problems from friends either.
There are videos on YouTube of people testing their PS3s and I have seen one article of a full on stress test of the PS3 at extreme heat and cold and the video ends saying "The only way to break the PS3 is to literally smash it" then shows a pic of some done smashing his for no reason.
My brother has his in an electronics cabinet that has a stereo system in it, modem, router, 4 game systems and has a glass door in front and he plays his PS3 for hours on end with no problems. and you can just FEEL the heat coming from there.
He has his XBOX360 outside the cabinet and we all know why...

PS3 is a tank. I've had mine on at least on standby when not playing games since 11/07!!! No overheating nothing. You pay for what you get and PS3 is a top quality product.
