They had the common belief in that time that there was a supreme being. This being controlled the sun, moon, stars, and the weather. They prayed to this being for their sustenance and when it was provided, they praised him, when it was denied, they felt that some one among them had broken their rules and they were all being punished. Their rules were similar to the Ten Commandments, but had some great differences. They believed in self sacrifice as a form of penitence, often denying themselves food and water for days.
