I have grown up with cats. And dont get me wrong, I love my kitties, but I just feel like I need a dog. I am actually a bit depressed that I cant own a dog. Every time I see a dog, I get excited to see them, but then I get sad because I want one. Every time I hear a bark I try to see where it is coming from. What can I do to keep my mind off of dogs? I asked the question earlier...but I wasnt satisfied with the answers. Remember, I CANT own a dog. Thank you.

I cant own a dog because I am with my parents. Also, my brother is allergic to dogs. I did volunteer once, but they didnt really let me do anything. I only got to pet 3 or 4 dogs, and I was there for 4 saturdays.

Why can't you own a dog, but you can own a cat. Give us more details.

Well geez if its because it might kill your brother I would say its a pretty good reason not to own one. Even though everyone seems to be saying you can own one later if you have a brother thats allergic you probably should never own one. Since your 12 you will probably say you wouldn't ever want to have him visit anyway, but that will change when you grow up.

Maybe if you love them so much you could volunteer at an animal shelter or work at a pet store. Maybe you're already in a career (I don't know how old you are) and that doesn't fit your schedule. By the way sorry if you got that answer before and didn't like it. Anyway, if you wanted maybe you could pick up some extra money walking dogs for others or spend some time at a dog park. Also, if time is really an issue and you can't fit any of that in, LOTS of pet stores love for people to come in and play with the puppies. It is hard for them to give all their animals the attention they crave until they get sold, so even if you don't buy they would love for you to just come by and help play. There are even paying jobs that fit that description. Good luck!

Well, it's not like you have to spend the rest of your life without a dog! If your situation doesn't allow you to right now, then find other ways of interacting with dogs. Can you volunteer to pet and walk the dogs at the local shelters? They really need human love and attention. I don't know what your situation is, do you live at home with parents? Then some day you will have your own place and can get all the dogs you want--like I did! :) If you live in a place that doesn't allow dogs, can you consider moving and finding a new place?

If you can not volunteer at a shelter why not volunteer to help a neighbor or two walk their dogs? Walking with a dog is a very good bonding technique and you could teach the dog discipline and learn a bit yourself. If you are good with the dogs and dependable perhaps at some point you could even charge a small fee for walking the dogs. There are lots of very busy people who would love to have a dependable 13 yr old walk their dog. I agree that dogs are wonderful and you show good taste. This may not help you take your mind off dogs but it could channel your interest into something useful. Good luck

What about volunteering at a shelter?

What about finding someone to let you walk their dog (most owners would be only too happy to let you lol)

What about offering to pet sit?

Why try getting your mind OFF dogs? You obviously like them, so find ways to fullfill that need without actually "owning" a dog.

I currently have two 100lb dogs, but if I ever ended up in an apt. or something where I could not have dogs I would be in the same situation your in. And I would do the above, find helpful ways to be around dogs as much as possible...it would benifit me, and benifit the dog(s) as well!

Volunteer!!! What a great opportunity. Shelters of all types need people to clean, groom and train dogs that are looking for homes and you'll be working with dogs all the time that you're there. If you have a specific breed of interest, check to see if there is a rescue group. Work at their adoption centers.

Consider dog sitting while neighbors are away so that you can take their dogs on walks etc., but return them to their own home, instead of yours.

Attend seminars and dog shows where dog people congregate. There are tons of ways to be involved with dogs without having one in your own home. Then, later in life, when things change, you'll have all kinds of dog experiences to make great choices when you do decide to add a dog to your family.

I'm sure you situation will change at some point in your life and you will be able to own a dog. So, focus on the future and the good times to come. Meanwhile, enjoy your kitties and plan on how to change your situation.

i love dogs too, all animals acually, you can't own one, but want to take care of one, give one love... volenteer at your local animal shelter, i do, and it's a very satisfying job. to know that your helping them, and giving them the love and care they so desperatly need. the look in there eyes tells you they really do know whats going on, and they are so happy to see you, because they know they will be walked ,petted, fed, and unconditionally loved .please try this, you will feel much better, i did.
