software industry has a lot of money to offer , also there are many oppurtunities in this field compared to other engineering fields Also mechanical/civil/etc engineering projects are less, there are fewer companies in India & the biggest ones are Govt. undertakings.Private jobs are few & only the best can avail the best

In India , picture is just reverse compared to the same abroad . Development / natural resource explotation is slow to cope up with the need of housing/health exerted by population growth .
You may find that Core engineers are in top most demand and properly compensated, in developed countries where more rapid development are taking place .

Software profession is comparatively a new field in India. Firms can do outsourcing jobs as indian labour is cheaper than other countries and Indian core Industries can manage without core engineers.

(1) Software profession is an arm-chair profession. Most people now-a-days do not like to work. They are afraid of hard-work. So, they seek arm-chair professions.

(2) The tendency of magic-mongering is rife at present. People want show that they can produce hi-fi results simply by manipulating computers and the like. This way they try to prove that they have a magical brain!! This is not possible in Mechanical Engineering as in this branch, everything is concretely visible, and manipulations are easily detected.
