From the religious point of view, dying while living means that we cannot make a different between right or wrong, good and bad. The worst thing is we didn't feel anything in our heart when we recite His name. To be precise, our heart is dying.

In my opinion, active alcoholics and addicts are dying while living. As are homeless street people, the gravely depressed, and the seriously mentally ill. For the rest of us,rich or poor, it can involve not being true to yourself. Also going along with the crowd for reasons of getting along, security, etc. Personally, I would much rather die than to live a lie. In time I would have to face my conscience, and the awards would never be worth it.

Anil,

If you do not feel the presence of a person even when he is around or his absence, hardly makes any difference to you, its akin to being dead inspite of being alive.
A few, though, live even after their deaths since their thoughts and their acts continue to live in our memories. Not necessarily, the good ones, since if Gandhi is remembered, so is Hitler, but for all the wrong reasons.
To put it more in our current context, lets assume that if I hang around at Y!A, for a couple of years, but if I fail to impress even a single soul with my answers, now that would amoung to dying while being alive in Yahoo Answers.

Life without Lord Krishna is worst than death ,its like a body without soul,so,if at any moment we forget the Lord we have died Krsna consciousness means to revive ones consciousness about Bhagavan & ones relations & then actions based on the knowledge of that relationship with Lord and ulitmate is Prema or Pure love of Godhead or Krsna-Prema that is the coveted goal of all devotees. So in a nutshell veda-sästra kahe——‘sambandha’, ‘abhidheya’, ‘prayojana’ ‘krsna’——präpya sambandha, ‘bhakti’——präptyera sädhana TRANSLATION “The Vedic literatures give information about the living entity’s eternal relationship with Krsna, which is called sambandha. The living entity’s understanding of this relationship and his acting accordingly is called abhidheya. Returning home, back to Godhead, is the ultimate goal of life and is called prayojana.

My understanding is to "die " to the world, to give up all the care you have for your physical life, & while still alive place all you devotion, desire, & love in your spiritual life. Christ told us to seek the kingdom first & all else would be added, that our Father would care for us like he does the lillies of the field, & that kingdom was within. To die while living is to love the Father so much that your life is seeking him rather than all the various stuff of the world. It is a tremendous step implying great trust & faith taken when union with the Father is more important to you than any thing this world can offer.

It means to die to the conditioned mind-set. Renewing your experience constantly by being present with what is 'happening' now.

Also, dying to the memories of 'the past' and day dreaming of the 'future'.

It is living in the objectified world, but not reacting to it, personalizing it, etc.

It takes a lot of suffering to give upon ones conditioned behavior. We repeat our 'karmic' patterns out of deeply ingrained habits. This we call living.

The question of dying and living is only meant for physical form and not for the eternal form (within us)...because when our physical form born, we started your journey towards death.By the definition of sareera(seeryate annena ethi sareeram)we are dying daily.Manasic feeling is due to ignorance.....

Dying to the flesh (sins - things that are not of God) and allowing the Holy Spirit to Live fully in you, changing you into the likeness of God, whilst you walk the Earth.

Living a life wherein your emotions and sentiments equal those of a dead body's.
In simpler words,it means your soul is already dead while your physical body is alive and kicking..
You just tend to move on with your life like a robot, doing chores mechanically with no joys or sorrows lacing your existence.
