my dad is in the hospital and they might have to operate on his liver

That would usually mean an unchecked infection, as in the person's immune system isn't working right. I'm sorry to hear about your dad, I hope he comes through okay.

Septicemia is a infection in the blood circulation. He will probably be getting antibiotics in his Intravenous fluids through the needle in his arm to fight the infection. I am not sure why he is having surgery on his liver but Im sure he is under good care. Maybe you can make a card for him.

The condition is known as bacteremia, bacteria growing and multiplying in the blood stream. Sometimes the source of infection is known such as meningitis, kidney infection, abscess, etc. Chills and high fever are common symptoms.

Bacteremia differs from septicemia in that in the latter the patient suffers from the effects of the bacterial toxins with symptoms such as low blood pressure, heart irregularities, organ failure, and inability of body cells to function properly.

It means that your father has bacteremia, a condition of the presence of viable bacteria in the blood and in some cases can lead to septic shock. However, this isn't a cancer issue.
