Ouch! It seems the cynics have the day.

To give an alternative perspective. It really depends on the organisation you work for. Some may be particularly sales orientated. Others may have a longer term view and want there account rep to focus on checking that the client is receiving the products and service levels they are paying for. Alerting the company or their boss to any problems the client may have. Getting an understanding of the clients business and provide them with advise on products or services which may solve issues they are experiencing. I have worked with many companies and few (if any) could say that their customers were aware of all they had to offer. Often buying in a product from another supplier just because that were not aware they could get it from there existing one.

Off course it is also true many companies confuse the role of account rep with sales rep or refer to the job as one thing when they mean the other. The same confusion is true of marketing and sales, however I digress. Whatever the job, people and communication skills will be high priority. And expect targets of one sought or another.

Best of luck.
