You will have to shop around for car rentals but you would be lucky to get anything at $150 a week. I would budget $250 a week. Petrol is probably going to cost $1.30 a litre, perhaps more, perhaps less. At 10litres per 100km that's $130 per 1000km. That's Sydney to Brisbane. Were you to go to Cairns and back from Sydney fuel will cost you between $700 and $800.

Accommodation prices vary enormously. The cheapest are country hotels where the rooms are basic but clean with the bathroom down the hall. You could find $25 a night away from major centres. There is plenty of backpacker accommodation up the east coast. Motels will be from about $60 a night. Resorts will cost you more.

Food prices vary depending on what you want to eat. Most accommodation will include breakfast so you have to find lunch and dinner. Some of the cheapest food in NSW and Queensland is in clubs - sports clubs, RSL clubs, workers clubs etc. You will need your passport for temporary membership. There are plenty of restaurants as well, some are expensive. You could eat well on a budget of $30 to $40 a day.

So
Car hire for three weeks - $750
Petrol - $700
Accommodation for 19 nights at $50 - $950
Food for one at $35 a day - close to $750

Total: $3150

That doesn't include sightseeing, entry to various things, trips etc. It also means you are looking for the best bargains everywhere. If your accommodation averages closer to$80 a night, add another $600.

You would have a comfortable trip for $1500 a week, very comfortable for $2000. $6000 is about 2500pounds.

I agree with a previous poster, if you want to go to a zoo, I recommend Taronga Park zoo in Sydney, one of the best in the world. I would avoid Irwin's zoo north of Brisbane, particularly if you are on a budget.

What do you mean by travel up the East coast? by car? If so then you can rent a car unlimited mil age for about $150 week from most car agencies. DO NOT rent a car at the airport or exchange any currency. The International airport in Sydney is a rip-off for that. Sydney to Brisbane is about 12 hr drive, Brisbane to Cairns ( where I lived for two yrs ) is 10 hrs. Driving up the east coast is fantastic with countless beautiful spots to stay and enjoy. Excluding the car rental but, including the petrol, food, accommodation, bits of shopping and tourist attractions ( stay away from Steve Erwins Zoo by Brisbane, its not worth the money ) you can figure $120-$150 per day Australian funds. English pounds ? I think about 80 per day should be sufficient.

you will need australian money - not english
cost depends on how you travel, what type of accommodation you will stay in. - are you eating in restaurants for every meal or backpacking & eating cuppanoodles every day???
if you are travelling alone - then suggest you join yha and stay at their hostels - cost about $26 per night for multi share. you can also cook in the kitchens in the hostels and take the tourist bus from place to place as you travel north.
three weeks is not very long to go from sydney to cairns. its a big distance - bus travel would be about 36 hours non stop.

The other answers you have received are very comprehensive, also think just how lucky you are, you'll get lots of dollars for your pounds. I went to the UK three years ago (I wanted to stay there forever!!) and got almost nothing for my dollars in pounds.......
So you will - at least - double your money......
welcome, for when you get here, and have a wonderful holiday. What a pity you didn't mention Melbourne, its the best part of Australia....

the Australian Taxation office put out figures of what they think is "reasonable" spedning money on trips and Brisbane is around $200 per day - including accommodation. if you work on about $15 per meal and about $50 per day your could live reasonably ok, but not extravagantly
