A Mormon is someone who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ L.D.S. the best bet would be to look up the beliefs on the Internet. An elder is someone who holds the Melchizedek priesthood in the Church. He must be at least the age of 18 to hold this priesthood. The priesthood allows him to do many ordinances by the authority of Jesus Christ.
As for the first answer: I would hesitate to believe anything that was written as there are no unsafe practices done with in the church and there are no cult like activity's at all. It is a lot like any other Christian Church with the exception we have more knowledge through later day revelation.

“I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. . . . When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” ( Joseph Smith—History 1:16–17).
