My pastor lives a very humble lifestyle. At the end of the year they have a year end meeting. At this meeting they show where every single dime goes - including the pastors salary and everyone elses salary that works at the church. Our church gives to the community in many ways. We also soley support an orphanag/school in Haiti. We just built them a new school that doubles for a church. I don't feel that my tithe money is being thrown away in the least. I love to give to the church as it helps so many people. No phantom, mercedes or cadilacs driven by our pastors.

As with any system there will be abuse. I am tired of throwing money away at governmental policies that destroy human life, or neglect human life. Religion can do the same thing. I find that it is better to put funds in local efforts that feed the children, help the unfortunatel and builds families. If the funds go beyond helping others then it is time to stop funding abuses and start helping each other. This is how the early Christians did it. Why not use the early church as an example?

No doubt there is abuse of money by churches just like there is abuse of money by governments. After all, churches are made up of people and like the Bible says, "there is none righteous, not even one". Christians are still sinners.

There is also good done with the money for example a church I used to attend donated a car to a single mom with two small children and also gave her bags of food and individuals in the church paid many of her rent and utility bills for her because she lost her job (no fault of her own). They practically supported her and her kids until she found a new job and was able to support herself.

Granted that is only one example, but personally, I beleive there is good and bad in all of life. There are good cops and bad cops; good teachers and bad teachers; good governments and bad governments; good churches and bad churches; etc. Point being, just because some are bad you don't eliminate all of them. Hopefully, you eliminate the bad and support the good. Of course in the real world the bad will never be completely eliminated.

I also know that at least some of the money donated to Katrina victims was donated by churches and Christians.

I had some really pathetic bosses in the past, but I wouldn't call all bosses bad because of those experiences.

Hope this answers your question at least in part.

I see my money being put to good use all the time. My church just finished building a new sanctuary, our mission team just got back from Haiti, our ministry team goes to Atlanta Union mission every week. I could name dozens of other minstries the money pays for.
By the way, my pastor drives a 15 year old, beat up Toyota Tacoma.

No preacher at any church I've attended lived a lifestyle like you are suggesting. Sure there are hucksters in every line of work, but you're wrong to consider that the norm. When choosing a church (we move a lot) we visit several churches to ensure they are preaching and living the principles of the Bible. And we also see where that money is going: the expenses of the facility and its staff of course, but local ministries and also international missions are funded by the tithes and offerings of believers. I recommend checking it out for yourself!

How do you think the church stays running? If not for the collections and all the volunteer hours our church would be shut down.Unless you want to donate the mortgage for us, then we could use the money for landscaping or finishing the inside or maybe filling the food pantry or maybe giving to the families in need, I could go on and on.

My pastor has a family car.
Any money given goes towards the school.
And not saying this because I'm a defensive donater.. I haven't donated to my church before.
But yeah, my pastors live in a normal house, with a family car/van.. thing. Nothing fancy in their lives.

Churches following the Bible (not all do, but if they follow it they...) do not use the money for selfish purposes, the money helps support their families, because it is their form of income, but most of it goes to missions and donations. Also, you can't throw away money to the Church because God tells people in the bible that giving alms (money) is the one thing you can test him on.
