Your dog can eat it. Honestly to put a stipulation that it's for show dogs I'm not sure, I have show dogs and their food doesn't specifically say it's for show dogs only. Plus I have 3 rescues and they are just as perfect in my eyes as any show dog I see in a ring so they should have anything if not more than a show dog. I used to add water to the food till I had one get sick, the higher quality kibble will actually spoil if it sits too long with water because there are no preservatives in the food to keep it lasting till the next ice age. I also noticed that when I had quit putting water in their kibble that the dry kibble got rid of the tartar on their teeth (I feed dry food and treat with raw). I have a 3 1/2 year old that I took to the vet last week and he though he had the wrong chart, he had to ask me twice if I brought Dylan in. I said yes this is Dylan and he asked a again (new guy). I said yes this is Dylan I only have one gray and white with blue eyes and that is Dylan. I had to ask why and he said "well his chart says he's 3 1/2, and his teeth look like he's 1" I said I know his teeth look awesome don't they, he said yes and was surprised since when I originally adopted him he did have tartar build up on his teeth when he was a year old and had suggested that I bring him in to have his teeth cleaned. Just for the record nothing was wrong with him I take all my guys back in after racing season for a full physical.

It doesn't matter how often you feed your pet...it matters how much you feed your pet. The amount of food is determined by the dog's weight, and will be listed on the bag of food. If it is more convenient for you to feed her the entire amount at once, that is fine. But there is nothing wrong with the way you are doing it now either.

EDIT:
OH NO! Whippit is right! I totally ignored the fact that you have a small breed! Small breeds need food more continuously. Feed at least twice a day. It is okay if she doesn't sit there and eat it all at once, but it needs to be available.

First, I would change the dog food. Purina, is not healthy at all. Switch to one one these: Canidae, Life's Abundance, Wellness, or Innova. Then to answer your question, leave out a bowl of dry or wet food out for the dog. Your dog will eat it when she is hungry. Just give her a scoop of dog food and she will come back to it later. She won't starve herself. Keep it out for a couple of hours and if she is not hungry at the time put it up. 1 meal a day is fine. Just give her dry food in a bowl and she will eat it in beetween times.

for such a small dog i'd suggest smaller more frequent meals, maybe free feed.

just put a cup of food down and let her decide when to eat. (this is of coarse assuming she is potty trained)

if she is not potty trained, i'd continue feeding in the morning and night, and if you still see a problem, or if your dog is losing weight, maybe a vet visit.

if there is nothing wrong with your dog, you can always entise them to eat by mixing a very small amount of wet food with the dry. if you do this, since your pup is small, maybe reduce to half a cup of food twice a day. there may be some runny poop with adding the wet, BUT if you slowly add wet into the food over time, it wont be as harsh on the digestive tract.

GOOD LUCK!

if you know when your dog gets hungry, then feed her at those times. it is best for dogs, especially small ones, to be fed twice a day. small dogs can suffer from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if only 1 meal a day
ask yourself this --
would you like to eat only once a day - or would you get really hungry (and maybe light-headed) ?
maybe she's like my dogs - not to keen on breakfast, but like lunch and a late dinner - same as what i do

No, continue to offer food 3 x daily. AT least 2 x daily. Toy breeds can have blood sugar issues without at least a little in their systems.

Purina is not the best food.

I'd consider trying a better quality food. Royal Canin, Innova,
Diamond....etc.....check the recall list first of course.

If you decide to try a different food, blend the dog over gradually, sudden changes are bad.

she'll be fine with one meal a day, but she probably got a hold of something that messed up her "i'm hungry at such and such time" schedule. skip a breakfast and then feed her dinner at her usual time and she'll get back on schedule if you still want to feed her twice daily.

i think you should leave her food down and let her eat when shes hungry. when she runs out of food fill it up again.
