Life on earth is a test – a preparation for what is to come. For believers, this is eternal life in the immediate presence of God. So how are we made righteous and able to receive this eternal life? There is only one way – through faith and trust in God's Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone else, will live again. They are given eternal life for believing in me and will never perish...” (John 11:25-26).

Are you asking if the existence of reality, the universe, and life in it requires a purpose?

Or are you asking if you can see any purpose in your own living?

Life, as in the phenomenon of nature where billions upon billions of different organisms have developed the ability to perceive, i.e. be conscious, exists as a result of chemical, physical and biological laws. Does the universe have a purpose? This question implies a consciousness outside the universe and outside of reality that had something to gain by creating the universe. That's what a purpose implies.

My answer to that is that we have no evidence that consciousness could exist prior to and independent of the existence of the universe. Consciousness is an attribute of living organisms. Only living things can have the faculty of perception, which is what we call consciousness. So, reality, the universe and life exist, that we know. Logic tells us that to this moment we have no evidence that reality and the universe are products of a consciousness, but, on the contrary, we have plenty of evidence that all kinds of consciousness are the products of the laws of physics, chemistry and biology. Human consciousness is the highest form of perception that we know. In other words, among all living things, we got the highest form of consciousness.

A purpose implies the existence of a conscious being that has the INTENTION of acting to gain something and reach a goal. We have no knowledge of a conscious being OUTSIDE of reality, that created reality from nothing for any particular reason. Since we have no knowledge, we have no right to answer this question by inventing a consciousness outside reality.

As to the purpose of your own life. You are in charge. You do have a consciousness. You perceive reality and it's up to you to give it meaning and purpose. A philosphy based on REASON would help you a lot.

Your question requires a Creator for only a Creator could have brought us into existence and at the same time given us a mission (purpose). Mindless processes such as evolution cannot give purpose to us anymore than a rainstorm can give purpose to a raindrop.

If we will admit the possibility of God, then God must have put our great need for purpose within our nature to point us to seek Him. So seeking our Creator is our purpose.

So we either have no purpose or seeking God is our purpose. Inventing our own purpose and pretending that it is real is just self delusion.

To build a house and give forth labor....to reep the benefits of your labor.

But, take note: the Lord must build this house otherwise you laboured in vain. "It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sheep." Psalm 127.2
