Well . . .after his resurrection, Jesus preached to the spirits in prison. That this took place after Jesus was resurrected from hell can be seen by a consideration of 1Peter 3:18-20, where the apostle shows that this took place after Jesus’ resurrection. Peter says it was while in the state of having been made alive in the spirit that Jesus went to preach to those disobedient spirits. A proper identification of those spirits also assists us in recognizing when this occurred in the stream of time. Those spirits were the disobedient angels of Noah’s day.
Moreover, these spirits were in Tartarus – not hell. Though many translations do not make this distinction, there is quite a difference between Hell (Hades) where all the dead go (even Jesus himself when he died) and Tartarus – a prison-like condition where the disobedient angels were consigned.

I'll try to be succinct. 1Peter 3:18-20 says 'Why, even Christ died once for all time concerning sins, a righteous [person] for unrighteous ones, that he might lead YOU to God, he being put to death in the flesh, but being made alive in the spirit. In this [state] also he went his way and preached to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient when the patience of God was waiting in Noah’s days, while the ark was being constructed, in which a few people, that is, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.
at 2 Peter 2:4. The apostle writes: “God did not hold back from punishing the angels that sinned, but, by throwing them into Tartarus, delivered them to pits of dense darkness to be reserved for judgment.
These "pits of dense darkness" refer, not to a place but to a debased spiritual condition. Jesus Christ, as the Greater Noah was also a "preacher of righteousness". What he preached to those spirits was not good news, but a message of their impending destruction. The book of Revelation transmitted in vision to John by Christ Jesus toward the close of the first century C.E. contains much about Satan the Devil and his demons as well as their ultimate destruction, hence, a preaching of judgment. (Revelation 12-20) Peter’s use of the past tense (“preached”) indicates that such preaching had been done prior to the writing of his first letter. He also shows that it occurred AFTER his resurrection or having been "made alive in the spirit"

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
JESUS preached to the Antedeluvians(people BEFORE the flood) through Noah to go into the Ark before the Flood comes and destroys the earth.
In Acts 2:31, "hell" means the grave. As far as the "soul" is concerned, the Greek word is"psyche" which means "life". In other words, HIS "life" was not in the "grave".

The "spirits in prison" were the Old Testament faithful who died prior to Jesus' death on the cross. These people were saved by their faith in the one true God. They were looking forward to the Messiah, but did not live to see Him. Jesus led these people out of "Abraham's bosom" and into heaven.
