I see Prius drivers in the left lane even when they are not passing. When they go up hills they go 10 mph under the speed limit. Is there something mechanical about the Prius that encourages bad driving or what?

I agree that some are playing the "max out the consumption screen MPG" game and as a result they are paying more attention to the MFD than the road. If I had a Prius (I want one badly) I would be in the slow lane most of the time on the interstate but I wouldn't hold up traffic because your great MPG figure is meaningless if some person driving a Hummer goes into road rage mode and shoots you or runs you off the road because a car that is getting more than 4 times the mileage and cost half as much is keeping him from going the speed he wants to.

Interesting study, and the results certainly say a lot about the mentality of the owners of said vehicle. Simply put, anyone that owns a prius has given up on any sort of 'fun' when driving. Or in life. Besides, if someone was really concerned about the envirionment/going green/etc, why would they even own a car to begin with?? The fact that there are so many out there proves yet another point. When did colorless vanilla suburbia become popular in all facets of life? And how did Toyota pull that off???? Toyota is the GM of the 21st century. I make life better for every prius owner, by calling the highway patrol on them for being a hazard to every other motorist due to their texting. All it takes is something un-vanilla happening and they panic, often ending up in a ditch, tree or another vehicle. So I pass them with the highway patrol on the phone, give the HP their plate number & location and suggest they send an ambulance. Works every time.

well well , I personally own a Prius and i have always wondered why when i am in left lane driving 75 mph and still getting 50 mpg why these idiots come up behind u flashing their lights wanting u to get over acting if ur driving 50 but if they would look ahead of them to the right they could see the car i am passing and ahead of me 1 car lenght is a 18 wheeler so couldnt go faster if i wanted to..? so answer that one I onced though my speedomenter wasnt acuurate so i had it checked by laser and it was a paerfect match . and i finally figured it out we have idiots on the road that think the hybrid (prius) cars cant hang with the bog dogs on the open highway, well i dont have a problem climbing hills and it has plenty of power and hey i fill up for a 1/4 the price it costs you and about 3 times less per month than u do so what is your problem, and for all the others whom agree with you when gas continues to rise doubling what u r paying now and u cant afford to even drive to work. i will be proud of my hybrid and btw i have a full size truck at home I know the difference in the hybrid and the combustible gasoline engines the car to my truck alot the car to a normal sedan nothing but technology and tons of fun gadgets to play with. and backed by a better warranty than chevy or ford has even been abkle to give on anything oerhaos they should consider bicycles they could possibly suceed. Thank you for your ignorance

You really aren't serious are you? Love my PRIUS. With the price of gas I get 45 - 55 mpg depending on the outside temp. Have no problem keeping up and passing traffic. The only thing that keeps me from way ove exceeding the speed limit is the fear of getting a ticket. I ususally pick out the car that's riving the fastest and follow that one.
No acceleration and pick-up problems.
The problem is the drivers. And it isn't just PRIUS drives that make one pass them on the right. Annoys me also. And I have friends who drive slooooly in the left had lane when they are going to make a left hand turn 15 miles down the road.
So go get yourself a PRIUS. It's not the car.

hahaha that's hilarious!

I drive a Prius but I stay on the right side. They have plenty of power and handle really well--they can keep up just fine if the driver wants to (300 lb-ft of torque!!) I hope people who drive them don't think they're better than everyone else but I have a feeling it does happen. They're not holy cars--they still burn gas. They are cool cars though. Sorry about the bad drivers!

I wish people wouldn't intentionally hold people up, and I wish Prii didn't cause attitude inflation. I guess just don't pay 'em mind and just go 'round 'em.

I've seen Prius drivers from California, Maine and South Carolina. I've had no issues with them. The drivers I take issue with are SUV drivers. 9 times out 10 they're speeding like they're driving a sports car and on top of it all, they tail gate like it's cool! Also SUV drivers "think" they own the road! So it's not the Prius drivers you have to watch out for. It's people driving bigger vehicles that think they're in control.

P.S.

People driving F-150's and Escalades are the biggest culprits on the road.

They're trying to save gas, you're not. Heck, I drive my 2007 Cobalt 5 speed like that (in the right lane, I learned lane discipline in Germany) and I get 42-45 mpg on trips..with the a/c on!

LOL, you have got to be kidding. You should drive in the Houston traffic. You get two boobs in both lanes going under the speed limit, and no one can get around them. Traffic is just crawling at 40miles an hours. No Prius is involved either.

The prius has 76 horsepower. the average car has 215 horsepower. Prius drivers can't go over 50 MPH it seems. And if they do, the engine might fail. Personally, the Prius doesn't make sense. They could do MUCH better.

They are harmless. It is the fat hilbillies with GEDs in Chevy pickup trucks that you have to look out for, they will try and run you off the road if they can.
