I don't know who fed you the tripe saying they are NOT guardians of people.... and that IS what it is... a bunch of tripe!!!

GP's were bred to be guardians, and they originally were only used to guard the flocks of sheep so the shepherd could get some sleep. They were also the shepherd's companions.

I have two pyrs, one male and one female. The most important thing they guard is ME! The cattle are secondary. They stay out all night and guard the cattle and the house. During the day, they want to escort me everywhere I go so they can guard me. They will take turns, but they DO guard me.

I have had a situation with EACH of them where they met someone they distrusted and my male disciplined the dangerous person and my female would not let the one she met anywhere near her. Had he taken any negative action towards me, she would have intervened.

The breeder was correct.
The people who contradict that fact, simply do NOT know great pyrenees and their talents well enough.

btw: Many pyr owners don't have a flock or herd, and in those cases, the family is all that they guard. Pyrs are not happy unless they are working dogs, and if you don't have a herd of animals to guard, they will guard you and your children. In my case, they guard both.

GP are a wonderful breed, but a tough breed. They are guardians over their people because they treat their family like their flock. I have owned a GP and work closely with GP rescue. The breed is certainly NOT for everyone. They require an owner who is well educated about the breed and the breed history. Owners of GP need a firm, but patient hand. Owners need to work with them from a very young age because they are not very accepting of "strangers" who come into the home, yard, etc. They are a very vocal breed.... and very drooly!

GPs are guardians of anything. They were just bred to guard the flock, but they will naturally guard anything they feel attached to including people, property, children, cars, etc.
Great Pyrenees have a very strong protective instinct and will guard anything they feel needs guarding. If not attached to you though, they won't protect you you.

They are bred to bond with and guard flocks against predators. NOT for guarding people against people.

A Pyr might guard your territory or not. It's not what they are bred for. They will tend to bark at strangers. As far as guarding? Depends on the dog, how it is raised and trained.

a guard dog is a guard dog. GP's get attached to their 'family' so if you teach them that goats are they're family then they'll guard goats, if you teach them that you and your family are their family, then they guard you.
