The word "gay" did not mean "homosexual" in American slang until the late 1950s or early 1960s, depending on where you were.
In WW2 days, it was customary for the crews of bombers to name their airplanes some kind of catchy or sentimental name that they thought would bring them good luck. Col. Paul Tibbets, who was the commander of the B-29 that dropped the first combat nuclear bomb on the Japanese City of Hiroshima (August 6, 1945), had named his airplane for his mother.
Enola was a well-known name for women in the first couple of decades of the 20th Century, and so was Gay, which meant "happy" in those days.
The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum now has the Enola Gay, dismantled, in storage. They get it out and display it from time to time. I sat in the pilot's seat one time.
"Gay" became a slang expression for "homosexual" 20 years after the war ended, because so many people noticed that most homosexual people are depressed and unhappy. So the meaning is ironic.
So was the meaning of the atomic bomb.

It was the name of the B-29 that dropped the nuke. As for the back ground of the name? Enola could have been the pilots girlfriend or wife's name. Gay back then meant happy, not homo.

No. This is the name of the plane that I think dropped the bomb on Hiroshima bringing about the end of the war. My Japanese aunt was there and lived through these horrible times. Very, very sad.
