Chaplains are considered non combative. I have heard that some Chaplains stay on base in what they call the "green zone" and that sometimes they go out with the troops, I have also heard that it is the chaplains choice, or that it is up to the commanding chaplain on base. Which of these is correct? And if an Army Chaplain does see combat, how often?

Chaplains do serve in combat. But, they do so unarmed. One Navy chaplain won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam. But, it was posthumously.
I've noted over the past week that you've asked what rank a Chaplain enters service at, whether they can be deployed, etc. Let me be blunt. Are you ready to carry the message of your God to anywhere on the planet? Go and seek out those would hear the message, even as bombs burst around you and bullets whiz by your head? If not, find some quiet suburban parish and live out your life preaching to the converted.
I spent a lot of time in service with true men of God from every faith. I also spent time with chaplains who were more concerned with the promotion board results than with any sign of the second coming of Christ. Those men and women in uniform need spiritual leaders, as well as tactical leaders. My suggestion to you is to visit some veterans' group in your area and talk to those who have served. Try and see if some reserve or guard unit in your area has a chaplain you can talk to. You owe it to yourself, to the men and women you might have to minister to in the future and to the God you worship to find out the truth of being a military chaplain.

Yes, chapains are assigned to combat units to tend to the spiritual needs of the men in combat. They are unarmed and take no part in the fighting.
