Scenario: Woman throws herself a birthday party, her partner has a band, the band performs at the party. Is it rude for the band to put out a tip jar? They are a working band and have paying gigs every week and they use the tip jar.

This was a small party for friends and family. Tipping didn't seem appropriate.

Rude?
No class whatsoever.
If her partner offered to have the band play at her party, then it is in bad taste to request tips. Like I will do you a favor as long as I get paid for it?
If she asked them to play at her party, then it is in bad taste to ask her guests to pay for the entertainment with tips.
If you are going to throw a party for yourself, you should be willing to foot the expense.
I kind of feel bad for her that she has to throw her own party. But, with a partner like that I am not surprised.
Why did he not throw the party or at the very least offer the bands services without tips?
It may be time to get a new partner.

Not all the members of the band were her partner, I would have expected the tip jar. I guess I am being accustomed to seeing them.
Just because there is a tip jar, doesn't mean they got or deserved a tip, Up to the customer!

While performing for a small group like a private birthday party it's kinda uncool to have a tip jar out. How much money would they make on a small group anyway. It just makes your quests feel obligated and uncomfortable being asked for money.

Oh, how nice. "honey, I will perform at your birthday party for free" then he puts out a tip jar.

Not only inappropriate but rude and cheap. If I were her I would have been, at the very least, embarrassed.

As the partner of this woman seems to control the band, it was in extremely poor taste to have a tip jar in evidnece.

Wife has band / always ask the host before setting out a tip jar. Dont announce that you do so, and make sure it is in plain sight.

It is a bit rude- but since it was a small party, it wouldn't kill anybody to support them with a small tip- maybe they felt comfortable enough to just use it. They didn't demand money, so really, not a big deal.

It would have been inappropriate for any sized party. All party expenses, including tips, are to be paid by the host.

In this case, no. It was her partner & it was for friends & family. I went to a Christmas party at a house. They had beer & wine, but if you wanted liquor it was BYOB. We did, & they they had the nerve to stop the music & take up a collection which was supposedly for a friend who had just lost his house. There was no friend in attendance .

The best guess is that their playing was their present to her. Should they get you to kick in for their present?
Absolutely not.
It was rude and classless.
(And I will bet the band sucked.)
