We recently acquired an approx. 2 year old Great Dane three weeks ago. She has been eating and drinking water normally but the past day she has been drinking very minimally and not eating at all. She will eat the dog treats but not food. We switched the food to something she had eaten previously but will not eat that either. She is not vomiting, does not have diarrhea but is more lethargic than normal. She doesn't appear to be in any pain and will come when called. Any suggestions?

This is a sudden change in behavior. She was fine with her dog food, her water, her new home for three weeks and suddenly something is up.

Is she eliminating normally? You said she does not have diarrhea but is she going at all?

Dogs who are not feeling well may still try to eat a special treat but they are still not feeling well. Dogs either do not feel pain as acutely as we do or hide it better. Did you take her to the vet when you adopted her? If not, this is a good time to go and see what is up. She might have eaten something that did not agree with her. Does she put things into her mouth on walks or eat things inside the house?

A healthy, happy dog should be eating especially if it is familiar food. A dog going 'off his feed' is often a first signal that something is up.

Just be aware that this sounds exactly like how my dane was acting right before it died. I feed him a temporary bag of Nutro dog food instead of his Eagle Pack for giants for a few days & he started acting like this, "depressed". A few days later he died of Heat stroke in 70 degree weather induced by eating something toxic. I don't know if it was the Nutro or something else. I had him cremated too soon to do lab work. Vets dont no sh!t about danes. I have to tell my vets how to do everything with my dogs otherwise they'll kill or injure them.

I would bake chicken & stir in rice with raw minced brocolli to get him to eat something. Go to the Great Dane Lady's website for more info. That site has helped me so much. She also has a chicken soup for danes.

What kind of food? One of the things people said after the food recall was .. The first sign of a problem was the dog refusing to eat the food.. I would find a good quality food and put it down and see if you can get her interested.. Don't add stuff to it to try and make it more appealing, you'll turn her into a picky eater..
Has she been seen by a vet since you got her? Take a stool sample with you and check for worms / parasites.

Go to your vet. That happened to our dog. She kept forgetting how to do things. Finally the only thing she could remember was us and she would whimper while we were not right next to her. She ended up dying. It was because she was old(14) that our dog died but if your dog is only 2 I am not quite sure.
Also though my new two dogs are constantly getting spoiled with treats so they just won't give up the thought of treats for a really long time.
She could be getting dog memory loss though so just see what your vet says.

She may be depressed or have something like a kidney infection. Take her to the park this afternoon and take her for a good walk. Then see if she has a better appetite. Talk to the vet by phone tomorrow. Maybe you are feeding her too much or maybe it is because she is new to your home and needs to get used to the routine.

How hot is it where you are? Could be she's just off her food and lethargic from the heat (they feel it even if inside most of the time). She should still be drinking though. If it continues more than another day or so, let the vet check her out.

You definitely need to take the dog to the vet to rule out any medical issues that is causing her not to eat. Once medical issues are ruled out it might be a behavior issue that needs to be modified. It could be as simple as just trying a different dog food too.

I wish you all the luck.

Great Dane Not Eating

This is called Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and this should be taken care of from the start. she cam to your house recently and this is very common in dogs. Girls are more sensitive to environment and people around. She might get some time to use to and needs some attention. You can call take her to previous owener for a visit or if possible call them to spend sometime with her. This should take care of it. Feed her what she eats. don't force her to eat or drink. Play with her, make her feel special and give her little attention (BUT NOT LOTS). Do not reward her bad behaviour at any time (we do it all the times specially when they are nw to house).
If the condition doesnot improves you may take her to a vet.
