Yes I believe in this gift and practice it.
There are two types of speaking in tongues - one is a prayer language offered to all who have receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and one is a gift of the Spirit - whereby, in an orderly fashion, a word is given from the Holy Spirit to a person or a church with interpretation.
Both are Scriptural....................................and the devil can't understand what you are saying!!!
Much increased power in prayer and power in living the Christian life.....................more intimacy with God I so recommend it!

I have been in churches where someone will stand up and speak in tongues and everyone will go quiet, and sometimes another will stand up and give the interpretation of it. Some say the language that they are speaking is a lost language that only God knows. My dad said when he was a boy a preacher he knew learned spanish overnight and didn't realize what language he had learned until he met a spanish speaking person and was able to understand what they said. There are some denominations that are very much against speaking in tongues, raising of ones hands, and dancing, mostly because they fear it and don't trust it. of course these are just my two cents

Yes. I believe that the Apostles and those present at the First Pentecost truly did "speak in languages that could be understood by Parthians and Medes and Edomites..and the dwellers from Mesopotamia..." No doubt. Scripture is clear...
But in my 50-years as a Christian and the last 15 as a Pastor...I have NEVER seen a genuine case of glossolalia.
Incoherent babbling, the kind condemned by the same Holy Scriptures? All of the time.
But no genuine "tongues", as in First Century times, no.

I had a hard time with this myself for awhile, but my priest said that there are many gifts from the Holy Spirit including this one. It is written in the Bible as well.
I think some people do fake it, but some people are actually doing it. If they are real they must have a second party as an interpreter.

I do believe in the speaking of tongues, only because I have been in the presence of those doing so.
I must confess, I was young at the time, and it scared me something fierce.
I didn't know what it was, or why they were talking like that.
I suppose it didn't help that when it happened, the entire room became quiet so they could listen.
I don't know why, it's not like they could understand the person.

Hello
Yes, I have learned four languages in my life time but it was a lot of time and hard work which requires a great deal of practice, Furthermore I understand what I am saying and can explain it to others, I did not need a zap from the Holy Spirit to accomplish this.
Cheers,
Michael Kelly

My feeling is that in Jesus time, speaking in tongues meant that if the disciples went to a foreign land, the spirit would speak in the tongue of the locality. What good is speaking words that no one understands?

I'm a Christian, but my church does not practice this and I've never seen anyone speak in tongues. I don't know enough about it to say one way or the other.

The gift of speaking in tongues is something the God will give anyone who asks. The trick with it is to allow yourself to be open to the Lord so that the Holy Spirit can control your mouth and the sounds that come out. It's kind of hard to explain. It is talked about in the book of Acts, in the New Testament.
Yes, I believe in speaking in tongues. It's powerful, and special. It's a heavenly prayer language that allows us to pray to the Lord when our conscious mind doesn't know what or how to pray.
