I've never done it voluntarily, but once when I was tripping on acid (this was many years ago; like 40 years ago), and once when I had made a suicide attempt, I did what I think was astral projection. The trick seems to be to set up something which you could consider proof, such as an open book on a top shelf that you could only read if you were floating near the ceiling. Then as you go to sleep, or into deep meditation, concentrate on the fact that your higher self does indeed know how to astral project, if you can quiet yourself enough to let it do it, and trust that you will be able to get back.

The two times it happened to me, I didn't care whether I would be able to get back. Nevertheless, I did get back. So chances are you will, too. But I said CHANCES; no guarantees.

If you are interested, you might read the article below showing how to consistently generate an out of body experience (the first is more technical from New Scientist, the second is more general from Time). Essentially they occur when the mind is convinced that the body is located somewhere other than where the senses tell it. There is nothing spiritual or supernatural about the phenomenon.
