Neutral safety switch may be bad---try wiggling the shifter or starting in neutral or just replace. Could also be a bad ignition switch---test for power at the starter solenoid with ignition turned to start position. Sounds like the battery is ok if it starts fine when it does start. Do all the other radio, heater, dash and headlights work when key is in run position? If not, I would suspect the ignition switch.

I had a 96 Explorer that was doing the exact same thing - I let it go until eventually it couldn't start at all! I had it towed, and paid tons of money for the tow fee, and to have it looked at, thinking it was my alternator or starter or whatever, and come to find out, it was just the battery. Once they put in a new battery, the car was as good as new. So, before you spend hundreds of dollars, I'd try just replacing the battery - hopefully that will solve the problem!

I'd suspect a dead spot on the starter. Every 4th or 5th time it happens to stop with the bad spot in contact and nothing happens. Replace the starter, and I bet the problem goes away.

Sounds like a starter or ignition switch or even a loose battery cable.
