My family recently found an orange and white kitten that was in need of a good home and even though we have four other cats we decided to keep him. We have had him for about 2 months and he was good for the first few weeks until we found sheets and blankets which smelled of cat urine. We didn't know if it was this new little guy (he is 4 to 5 months) or our older male cat (almost 3 years old). Both of the male cats are neutered but we thought our older cat might be marking his territory from the new kitten but recently I caught our new kitten urinating on a bag in our basement. Like I said he is neutered and he uses the litter box to defecate but not to urinate. Any Suggestions?

Ok assuming that he does not have a medical problem causing him to do this such as a urinary tract infection. Try putting him in a small room such as a bathroom with a litter box in it for a couple of days. It sounds a little harsh but so is having a house that smells of cat urine. I worked at a veterinary clinic for 2 years and this is what the veterinarian would tell people to do with a problem such as this. Two days should be sufficient. If he is still going outside of the litter box after you do this he may have a uti or something else going on and should be taken to a vet to see what is going on. Hope this helps.

Has he been checked for a urinary tract infection? That might be the cause. You may need to have that checked by the vet.

He may also not like the litter. If it's the clumping scented type, try switching to regular clay litter (like Johnny Cat). He may like that more.

Two litter boxes would be best also if you only have one.

Additional litter boxes and make sure that the litter box is kept very very very clean.

Also, have the cats checked for Urinary Tract Infections (UTI).

Well, at least he has learned how to "think outside the box"
