I have a female black lab mix about 5 years old. When we are out walking and I run into a guy that I think is attractive, she will start barking at them. She doesn't seem to pay any attention unless the guy is interesting. It's kind of annoying.

I had always thought that walking your dog was a good way to meet guys. You know "Oh, what a cute dog. What's her name?" and then the conversation goes on from there. Not with my dog it doesnt. She lets them know right away that SHE'S not interested. Anybody have suggestions or similar experiences?

Well I've always maintained if my dog don't like someone there is a reason. She is protecting you, she has sensed your interest and her opinion so far is maybe your picks were wrong. Maybe she's a lady? Doesn't approve of picking up guys in a park :)

How have you done with relationships so far? In the past when you've started dating a guy that you found interesting does it end up being some really terrible relationship? Because if that's the case, maybe the dog sees something you don't. Maybe you should try talking a little while to guys that the dog likes and see if there isn't something there.

On the other hand, it could be something else that's bothering the dog and it's just coincidence that it seems to happen when you find someone interesting. For instance, dogs' noses are more sensitive than ours. Maybe one of the things you find "interesting" about a guy, whether consciously or not, is the scent of his cologne, whereas your dog might find that scent to be objectionable. Or maybe it's more subtle than that. Where you may be picking up on pharamones, your dog may be smelling B. O.

It could also be that your dog is in the mood to keep on walking whereas you want to stop and talk to this guy. She sees him as an obstacle to her enjoyment and therefore tries to chase him off.

Could you be misinterpreting your dogs bark? I used to think my landlady's dog was being hostile toward me when he was barking, when in fact he was trying to call attention to himself so that I would scratch him behind his ears.

your dog needs to learn that they are friendly people, not someone that is harmful.
First, have a male friend help you by walking down the street (of course you'll be walking also) and when she starts barking, correct her (by saying no or whatever you use to tell her she did somthing wrong) and give a little yank on her leash. When she stops barking, praise her and have the male come over and pet her and maybe give her a treat. If she doesnt bark in the first place, praise her and have the guy come ove and reward her.

By the guy coming over and petting her, tells the dog that he is friendly, and means no harm.

YOur dog can be barking because she is overprotective of you. Dont let your dog be overprotective.

I think your dog senses are correct. Just because a guy looks attractive doesnt mean they are inside too. you shouldnt judge a guy like that. maybe your dog knows their not the right man for you. I would keep up with it and see what happens. Maybe you should talk to man less attractive and find out who he is for himself not his looks. Labs are very friendly dogs so there shouldnt be a problem.

I think your dog gets jealous because she isn't the center of attention.
I think she barks to get a reaction from you whether positive or a negative attention, it is still attention.
I think she needs to go to an obedience class where she can get socialized and get used to interaction with other people besides you.

She can likely sense that you are interested ... And doesn't want any guys interfering in what you guys have together. Teach her not to bark at people, correct her when she does it, or you are destined to live your life alone.

Yes, the dog senses a weasel. Maybe you should stop looking at "BAD BOYS" and raise the bar some.

Labs are FRIENDLY dogs.

probably, but a rare chance, they men you meet probably seem as dog haters to your dog.

OR she's jealous that someone wants to be your friend too ;)
