I used to date girls from online exclusively. It was easy, didn't have to leave my house or hang out at bars etc. Until i realised that most girls looking for guys online had some problems. Clingy, insecure, or just plain psycho. There were some nice girls I met but after a month or maybe even a year, thing just went to sh**. my brother met his wife online. They dated for 5 years, been married for 3 years, have a 2 year old daughter, and 4 months ago she told him she wants a divorce. She met some guy at work and thats that. Everyone else I know that met people from internet dating all have the same problems. i wouldnt do it if I were you. Maybe to get some tail and have a one night stand. but I wouldnt put too much faith in it turning into a great relationship. Im sure some people met online and have a good marriage or w/e but I dont know anyone personaly. Its all a bunch of crap.

In real life, online love affair normally don't work out. You never know the true person behind the computer, and they could be telling you things that you wanna hear instead of what they really like or dislike.

An average person dates 10 people before getting married. With a divorce rate of 50%...i'd say it's even lower than that.
The real question is how long a "love affair" lasts?

The best success I have seen was a guy I used to work with - he 'dated' a girl in the US (he was here in the uk) for 2 years over the net, and then moved over there to study. They planned to marry, but she left him after a further 3 years saying that she wanted to see more people before marrying. He's now back in the UK.
More often, maybe three dates?

more often than most people give them credit for.
so many people end up getting married after meeting on websites like myspace and hotornot.
not to mention the chat rooms and actual dating sites like eharmony.com.
i think that couples who have online love affairs are actually more compatable than thoes who met in real life because you are drawn to the others person's wit and personality rather than just the physical.

I found this article that talks about this very subject. Here's what they wrote:
<<20+ million online daters (not including social networks) for 2006 leading to several million paid online dating users.
1. two people IMing/emailing online - several million daters make it this far
2. two people talking on the phone - 5+ million with at least one phone encounter
3. face to face meeting - 5 million meet face to face
4. active dating, 3 dates or more (sexual) - 4 million actively date one person or more
5. 3 months relationship - 750,000 make it into an ongoing relationship of 3+ months
6. 9 months - 250,000 make it to 9 months with at least one person
7. fiance/prolonged relationship/15 month - 100,000 have prolonged committed relationships
8. marriage - 50-75,000 marriages will result from online dating introductions this year >>

WELL THAT DEPENDS ON EACH PERSON, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. I MET MY BOYFRIEND I HAVE NOW IN A YAHOO CHAT ROOM. WE HAVE NOW BEEN TOGETHER ONE YEAR, WE LIVE TOGETHER. AND WE ARE COMPLETELY HAPPY. I LEFT MY EX FIANCE FOR MY NEW MAN, B/C MY EX DIDN'T MAKE ME HAPPY. SO I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON WHY U ARE HAVING THE LOVE AFFAIR. IF YOU ARE DOING JUST FOR FUN, BECAUSE U KNOW NOTHING WILL COME OF IT. OR IF U REALLY MEAN IT , AND HOPE TO FIND SOMEBODY THAT MAKES U HAPPY. I ADMIT, MY INTENTIONS WERE NOT TO FIND ANYBODY ELSE THAT WAY, BUT IT ENDED UP THAT WAY, AND IT WORKED OUT GREAT. SO OUR ONLINE LOVE AFFAIR, IS ONE THAT MADE IT.

its hard to expect that "online love affair " will work out in real life. You have to spend time with the person in life to know if you are compatible(for both people) good luck to you.

Given the average rate of divorce these days, I'd say about as often as a marriage makes it 5 years.
