When I turn the ignition to start the car it sometimes just "clicks" without turning over at all. After about 3 turns of the key and 3 "clicks" later the battery (with clean terminals) will turn the engine and it will fire right off. I thought maybe the battery or starter, but it turns the engine over strong,.....when it engages. Does it sound like something electrical?? It used to help when I moved the gear shifter around a little bit, but not any more. Thanks for your help.

It sounds like the neutral-start switch. You say it used to help when you moved the shifter. Try putting it in neutral and turning the key, if no help, replace the switch.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad or out of adjustment---it prevents your car from starting unless the shifter is in Park or Neutral. Could also be a bad ignition switch but the shifter has nothing to do with that. My guess is the neutral safety switch----it's usually mounted by the shifter or is a pie shaped switch on the bottom front of the trans. You can sometimes jump the wires to each other and bypass the switch temporarily but make sure you never try to start in gear.

FIRST CHECK IF YOUR BATTERY IS GOOD. NEXT CHECK IF YOUR STARTER IS GOOD. IF BOTH OF THOSE ARE GOOD THEN YOU MIGHT NEED AN ELECTRICAL PORTION OF AN IGNITION SWITCH. BUT ITS POSSIBLE BECAUSE YOU SAID YOU MOVED THE SHIFTER AROUND TO HELP YOU MAY NEED A NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH. IF THAT DOESNT WORK THAN YOU HAVE A SHIFT LINKAGE PROBLEM.

Could be a bad starter, but, my guess would be ignition switch (the electric one not the key switch).

It looks like you have found your problem. Some EGR valves require back pressure to work properly. If you have one of these, get your exhaust fixed first (even if you buy muffler tape and do it your self) There is no guarantee this will work but it's a start.

I would check the connections between the solenoid and the starter for a loose wire...could be your solenoid is sticking as well.

Good Luck!!!
