My wife and I are having a friendly disagreement about it. It appears that maybe the terms mean different things in different regions.

Could you please also respond with the state or nation you live in.

Pig tails are when the hair is divided into 2 sections and then braided. A Pig Tail (singular) is when the hair is braided into a single plait.

Pony tails are when the hair is divided into 2 sections and then each section is gathered into a "bunch" with an elastic which can be set high or low on the head. The effect creating a look that appears like the tail of a horse. A Pony tail (singular) is when the hair is not divided but simply gathered into a bunch with an elastic. Again, this bunch can be set high or low on the head.

I live in Florida; however, I have also lived in North Carolina, Virginia and California. In all 4 places the definitions remained the same.

Hope this answers your question!

All my life in the United States, New York City, to be exact, pig tails meant braided hair, one braid on each side of the head. Pony tail is the style for long hair where it is gathered at the top and secured with an elastic band or something like that, and hangs down from the center top of the head.

In Scotland - Pigtails refer to plaited hair, normally one on each side of the head, but also one down the middle. Pony tail relates to hair pulled back in a band. However, two pony-tails (one on each side) are referred to as 'bunches' . Origins? The pony tail simply because it looks like a pony's tail, pig tail for the reason that when you braid hair, the little bit at the end normally curls like a pig's tail.

So there you go.......

Pig Tails are braids and Pony Tails are loose hair pulled back in a hair band. Either can be one pig/pony tail or many.

Wow. I never knew these were different in different parts of the country. Where I live, central Kentucky, a pigtail is braided. A pony tail is one bunch of hair gathered together either in the back or side. Dog ears are when there are two bunches gathered, one on each side of the head.

Pig tails are when the hair is split into two, and bunched with one on each side of your head.
